Cortland Drops Season Opener to William Smith at Day 1 of Cortaca Classic

CORTLAND, N.Y. - William Smith shot 70 percent in the first half to take a 25-point halftime lead and the Herons defeated Cortland, 82-54, during the opening day of the Cortaca Classic women's basketball tournament.

Day 2 of the tournament moves to Ithaca on Saturday, with Cortland facing St. Lawrence at 1 p.m. and William Smith playing Ithaca at 3 p.m. Ithaca defeated St. Lawrence, 81-54, in Friday's second game at Cortland.

Gabrielle Eure led five William Smith double-figure scorers with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting and also grabbed 10 rebounds Alyssa DiCampli and Mia Morrison scored 13 points each, Melanie Patterson netted 12 points, and Natalia Baum added 11 points and four steals for the Herons (1-1).

Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) led Cortland (0-1) with 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Alyssa Crosby (Brier Hill/Hammond) scored 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and Danielle Levine (Holbrook/Sachem North) led the team with nine rebounds and three steals.

William Smith finished the first quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 19-6 lead, and the Herons opened the second quarter with a 10-3 run to push their lead to 29-9 with 7:29 remaining. William Smith led 48-23 at halftime on the strength of 70 percent shooting from the floor (21-of-30) compared to 29 percent (9-of-31) for Cortland.

The Herons' lead remained at 21 points or better the rest of the game. William Smith finished the game shooting 54 percent from the field and 70 percent (14-of-20) from the foul line. Cortland improved to 36 percent from the floor in the second half and ended at 33 percent for the game.
