Men's Hockey Earns WNY Sweep with 8-4 Win at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Seven different players scored goals as the Cortland men's hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to four games with an 8-4 win at Fredonia Saturday night in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons improved to 6-5-1 overall and 4-3 in the conference, while the Blue Devils fell to 4-6-1 and 4-5-1.

Sophomore Mike Crowley (Buffalo/Springfield Blues) paced the Cortland offense with two goals and two assists. Senior Casie Garrison (Cortland/Philadelphia Revolution) and freshman Dougie Elgstam (Stockholm, Sweden/New Jersey Rockets) each tallied one goal and one assist. Juniors Darren McCormick (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and Tommy Nolan (Mahopac/Connecticut Oilers) and freshman Tony DeVito (Chicago, IL/New Jersey Titans) and Stefano Alonzi (Maple, ON/Burlington Cougars) picked up one goal apiece. Sophomore Andrew Gleason (Vestal/Syracuse Stars) and freshman Aidan Salerno (East Atlantic Beach/Soo Thunderbirds) each recorded two assists. Junior goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) made 36 saves.

Kyle Jelinski and Todd Schauss led Fredonia with one goal and one assist each. Jacob Haynes and Bobby Polachek added goals, Ryan Dunn collected two assists and Sean Leonard, Samuel Wilbur and Jimmy Morgan each chipped in with an assist. Goalie Eric Bogart stopped 12 shots, while Anton Rosen registered 14 saves.

Cortland struck early, grabbing a 3-0 lead just 1:35 into the game, and led, 4-1, after the first period. The Blue Devils pulled to within 4-3 with a pair of power-play goals less than three minutes apart in the second period before Crowley netted a power-play goal four seconds before the end of the period to make it a 5-3 game.

The Red Dragons quickly went up 7-3 as Garrison scored 56 seconds into the third period and DeVito notched a power-play goal 1:08 later. Jelisnki pulled Fredonia within 7-4 at 13:54, but Elgstam sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 18:56 after Fredonia pulled Bogart for an extra skater.
