Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and
Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) and junior
Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) combined for 14 goals as the nationally top-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team defeated 18th-ranked Union College, 19-8, Thursday afternoon in non-conference action.
Gentile and Ohberg each recorded five goals and one assist, while Monaghan tallied four goals and two assists for the Red Dragons (3-0). Sophomore
Hannah Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee) scored a goal and added a game-high four assists, senior
Nicole Bello (Camillus/West Genesee) contributed one goal and one assist and senior
Elizabeth LaComb (Syracuse/West Genesee) and juniors
Allyson McNerney (Tully) and
Makenzie Annable (Navarino/Onondaga) each chipped in with a goal.
Cortland junior goalie
Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) made nine saves and surrendered six goals in 50 minutes. Junior
Victoria Fusco (Watertown/Immaculate Heart) stopped four shots and allowed two goals over the final 10 minutes. Beshlian recorded six ground balls, and Monaghan collected five. Senior
Colleen Wright (Huntington Station/Huntington) scooped up four ground balls and caused two turnovers, sophomore
Sydney Oshinsky (Oceanside) forced three turnovers and Gentile secured six draw controls.
Cailin Pandolfi led the Dutchwomen (1-1) with three goals and two assists. Maggie Comiskey tallied two goals and one assist, Jessica Farland had one goal and one assist and Jackie Hagopian and Kellie Cronin each scored once.
Hallie Stone started in goal and made three saves in 26:13. Jen Hughes played 33:47, stopping six shots. Farland recorded six ground balls, while Cronin collected five, and Kate Kurchena won six draws.
Leading 4-2 just before the midway point of the first half, the Red Dragons outscored Union, 9-2, over the final 14:05 to take a 13-4 lead into the break. Gentile netted four of her goals in the opening 30 minutes, and Monaghan and Ohberg each scored three times.
Cortland extended the lead to 17-4 just before the midway point of the second half. Ohberg scored twice and Monaghan and Gentile each notched a goal. Union answered with four straight goals, two from Pandolfi and one each from Comiskey and Cronin, to make it a 17-8 game with 4:24 remaining. LaComb and McNerney finished the scoring with goals at 2:46 and 30 seconds, respectively, for the 19-8 final.
