CORTLAND, N.Y. -
Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) hit a game-tying three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth and
Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Cortland rallied to defeat Geneseo, 5-4, and complete a sweep of the Knights in the SUNYAC openers for both teams. The Red Dragons won the opener, 5-1, behind a five-hitter by
Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa).
Cortland (13-3, 2-0 SUNYAC) will host Brockport in a doubleheader Saturday at noon. Geneseo (5-9, 0-2 SUNYAC) was the SUNYAC tournament runner-up to Cortland last spring.
Cortland 5, Geneseo 1Flint improved to 7-1 with the win in the opener. She fell behind 1-0 on a Danni Napoli solo homer in the top of the second, but held the Knights scoreless the rest of the way.
Cortland took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. The inning started with singles by
Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) and
Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro), and a
Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) single down the left field line drove home Bucci. Two batters later,
Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) hit a two-run double to left center.
The Red Dragons added two runs in the fourth. Wolstenholme led off with a double and went to third on a one-out bunt single by
Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy). Pinch hitter
Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) singled to right center to drive in Wolstenholme, and an error on the play allowed Phillips to score from first.
Geneseo had opened the top of the fourth with singles by Cat Krok and Napoli, but the next batter popped up to short and Napoli was doubled up at first. A flyout ended the inning. The Knights' lone baserunner the rest of the game came on a two-out double by Krok in the sixth.
Bucci and Phillips each finished 2-for-3 and Barbato was 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI for the Red Dragons. Krok and Napoli each went 2-for-3 for Geneseo.
Mikayla Moore started for Geneseo and allowed eight hits, two walks and five runs, four earned, in three and a third innings. Alexis Kidder pitched a scoreless two and two thirds innings and allowed only two hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
Cortland 5, Geneseo 4Cortland trailed 4-0 entering the bottom of the sixth before rallying to tie the game. With one out, Churchill doubled to right center and went to third on a Barbato single up the middle.
Mikayla Shade (Bethlehem) followed with an RBI single to left, and Wolstenholme ripped the first pitch she saw over the fence in left center for the tying home run.
In the bottom of the seventh, Bucci led off with a single down the right field line and was sacrificed to second by Schoonmaker. Kidder, who entered in relief in the sixth, struck out the next batter for the second out, but Churchill ended the game with an RBI single to right.
Geneseo jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Alyssa Persich and Napoli opened the game with singles. With one out, Claire VanNewkirk hit a ball back to Cortland starting pitcher
Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley). Lachall's throw to third base was high to allow two runs to score. Emily Martin followed with an infield single, with VanNewkirk thrown out at third on the play, and Jenna Phillips hit an RBI single up the middle to finish the scoring in the inning
Cortland turned a 6-4-3 double play with runners on first and third and one out in the second to keep the game at 3-0. Geneseo picked up a run in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead as Anna Merante singled, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single by VanNewkirk.
Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) relieved Lachall in the third and earned her second win of the season. She gave up only three hits and two walks, struck out one and allowed one run in five innings. Taylor Moore started for Geneseo and took a no decision with four runs allowed on eight hits in five and a third innings. Kidder suffered the loss after allowing the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Churchill led the Cortland offense by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Shade was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Bucci went 2-for-4 with a run, and Wolstenholme was 1-for-3 with her three-run homer. Persich finished 2-for-4 and Phillips was 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI to lead the Knights.
