Red Dragons Overcome Tarp and Weather to Sweep Brockport

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Juniors Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) and Jamie Lachall (Philadephia, PA/Sun Valley) each turned in solid pitching performances as Cortland swept visiting Brockport, 5-1 and 3-0, in a SUNYAC doubleheader.

The start of the twinbill was delayed nearly an hour by a brief but strong storm. The teams attempted to tarp the field as the storm hit, but forceful winds actually blew the tarp on top of the backstop and home dugout area. The tarp was eventually freed from the backstop and the field was prepared for play, and the weather throughout the doubleheader alternated from clear skies to rain to sleet to snow.

Cortland (15-3, 4-0 SUNYAC) will host the University of Rochester in a non-league doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Cortland 5, Brockport 1

Flint allowed four hits and one run over seven innings for her eighth win in nine decisions this spring. She struck out two batters and walked none. Korey Kibling went the distance for Brockport and allowed 10 hits and five runs, four earned, in six innings with two walks and a strikeout.

Kaleigh Churchill's (Camillus/West Genesee) RBI single gave Cortland a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Brockport tied the game in the second when Shelby Perry singled and pinch runner Kathleen Laskey scored on a double by Karleigh Eaton.

Cortland took the lead with two runs in the third on a Mikayla Shade (Bethlehem) RBI single and an Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) RBI triple to right center. Stephanie Tirone (Amherst/Williamsville South) led off the bottom of the fifth with a homer down the left field line for her first collegiate round-tripper. Later in the inning, Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) and Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) each singled, with an error on Barbato's single allowing Cork to score.

Shade finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored and Barbato was 1-for-2 with a walk and run scored for the Red Dragons. Perry went 2-for-3 to account for half of Brockport's four hits.

Cortland 3, Brockport 0

Cortland won the nightcap behind Lachall's five-hit shutout as she improved her record to 4-2. She struck out four batters and walked two. Brockport's Jaime Berger tossed six innings and gave up only three hits and three runs, one earned, with three walks and four strikeouts.

The Red Dragons took the lead with two runs in the third without the benefit of a hit. Cork walked and Barbato was safe on a throwing error during a sacrifice bunt to put runners on first and second. A Churchill grounder to third was misplayed to load the bases and Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool) walked to force in a run. Two batters later Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) hit a hard liner down the left field line. Brockport's Laskey made a nice running catch near the fence, but the play resulted in a sac fly to score Barbato.

Cortland tacked on its final run in the fifth. Barbato led off with a single and Churchill walked. A one-out grounder moved the runners to second and third, and Barbato scored on a wild pitch.

Brockport's best scoring chance came in the top of the third with the game still scoreless. Brianna Harris singled with one out and advanced to third on a Morgan Flamholtz double. Lachall escaped the jam with a groundout to third and a fly out to right.

Barbato went 2-for-2 with two runs scored for Cortland, while Eaton finished 2-for-3 for Brockport (10-8, 0-4 SUNYAC).
