Cortland Uses Seventh-Inning Magic in Pair of Victories at Buffalo State

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Cortland scored five runs in the top of the seventh to rally from a 2-1 deficit in the opening game and scored twice in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie in the nightcap as the Red Dragons extended their winning streak to 10 games with a SUNYAC sweep at Buffalo State, 6-3 and 3-1. Junior Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) drove in the tying run in the opener and the go-ahead run in the second game.

Cortland (17-3, 6-0 SUNYAC) will stay in Western New York and will play Fredonia Thursday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Cortland 6, Buffalo St. 3

Cortland trailed 2-1 entering its last at-bat in the seventh. Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy) opened the inning with a double. Pinch hitter Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) reached on an error to put runners on first and second. Alissa De Padua (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley), who pinch ran for Phillips, and Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow), who re-entered for Hoyt, went to second and third on a wild pitch.

After Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) walked to load the bases, Buffalo State got a force at home on a grounder to third for the first out. Churchill followed with an RBI single through the right side to tie the game, and Mikayla Shade's (Bethlehem) two-run single scored Cork and pinch runner Shannon Damon (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea). The final two runs scored on an error and a wild pitch.

Cortland led 1-0 in the third on a Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) RBI double, but the Bengals scored twice in the fourth on an error and a Sarah Gorski RBI double.

Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) threw a complete game for Cortland for her ninth win in 10 decisions this spring. She gave up 10 hits and three runs, struck out four and did not walk anyone. Buffalo State's Lexi Haley allowed six runs, three earned, on eight hits in seven innings with four strikeouts and three walks.

Shade finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and Cork was 1-for-2 with two walks for the Red Dragons. Gorski and Laura Crooks each went 2-for-3, with Gorski driving in a run, and Chrissy Rennard was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Bengals, who out-hit Cortland 10-8.

Cortland 3, Buffalo St. 1

Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) tossed a two-hitter with three strikeouts and no walks to improve to 5-2 on the season. The only run she allowed was unearned. She retired 15 of the last 16 batters she faced from the third inning on.

Buffalo State starter Jordan Sarat allowed only one run on four hits over the first six innings before being tagged for two runs on three hits before being relieved two outs into the seventh.

Buffalo State led 1-0 in the second on a Jean Stahl single and two Cortland errors. The Red Dragons tied the game in the top of the fifth when Phillips walked, was bunted to second by Bucci, moved to third on a Cork single and scored on Barbato's RBI groundout.

Bucci led off the top of the seventh with a single. After Bucci stole second, Sarat retired the next two batters on a flyout and a groundout. Churchill broke the tie with an RBI double to left center, and Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) also hit an run-scoring double to left center to put Cortland up 3-1.

Wolstenholme finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Bucci and Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) each went 1-for-2 with a walk for the Red Dragons. Melissa Woods and Stahl provided the lone two hits for Buffalo State (8-10, 0-2 SUNYAC).
