ONEONTA, N.Y. - Senior
Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) scored five goals to become just the fourth player in program history to reach 200 career goals as the nationally top-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team improved to 11-0 overall and 3-0 in the SUNYAC with a 21-4 win at Oneonta (3-8, 0-3) Tuesday afternoon.
Monaghan now has exactly 200 career goals, trailing only Lindsay Abbott (256), Maria Di Fato (244) and Jeanna Angotti (211). Junior
Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) also had a career day, compiling a personal-best nine points on three goals and a career-high six assists.Â
Overall, 11 different Cortland players scored a goal in the game. Senior
Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) tallied four points on three goals and one assist, sophomore
Hannah Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee) totaled seven points on two goals and five assists and senior
Nicole Bello (Camillus/West Genesee) scored twice.
Freshman
Madison Lyon (Tully) recorded her first career points with one goal and one assist, while seniors
Colleen Wright (Huntington Station/Huntington) and
Elise Bennett (Webster/Webster Thomas), juniors
Allyson McNerney (Tully) and
Makenzie Annable (Navarino/Onondaga) and freshman
Carly Stone (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) each contributed a goal. Sophomores
Megan Gonzalez (Miller Place) and
Katie Wolfe (East Amherst/Williamsville North) chipped in with one assist apiece as the visiting Red Dragons assisted on 15 of their 21 goals.
Junior goalie
Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) stopped four shots and allowed four goals in 46:21 for Cortland before giving way to junior
Victoria Fusco (Watertown/Immaculate Heart), who made one save over the final 13:39. Gentile collected four ground balls and won six draw controls, Monaghan also secured six draws and juniors
Kaitlin Antelmi (Bridgeport/Chittenango) and
Laura Messer (Ransomville/Niagara-Wheatfield) each caused two turnovers.
Kelsey Cohen, Jaime Morris, Katie Flannery and Danielle McIvor each netted a goal for Oneonta with Taylor Casey picking up an assist and three draws. Goalie Jaclyn Marry made eight saves, and Kaitlyn Norton led the team with three ground balls.
Cortland took control of the game early, building a 7-0 lead less than seven minutes into the game as Elmer recorded two goals and an assist and Ohberg registered one goal and four assists. The lead grew to 13-2 at the half with Monaghan closing out the opening 30 minutes with a pair of goals.
Monaghan notched her fourth goal of the game at 27:23 of the second half and eventually scored her 200th career goal on an unassisted effort at 17:41, giving Cortland a 16-3 lead. After Morris scored for Oneonta at the 13:56 mark, the visiting Red Dragons closed the game with the last five goals from five different players, including Lyon's score with 8:08 remaining, for the 21-4 final.
