Ohberg Eclipses 100 Career Assists as #1 Cortland Defeats Geneseo, 16-4

GENESEO, N.Y. - Senior Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) scored a game-high six goals and junior Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) scored six points on three goals and three assists to become just the fifth player in program history to reach 100 career assists as the top-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team defeated Geneseo, 16-4, in SUNYAC action Thursday afternoon. 

The Red Dragons improved to 14-0 overall and 6-0 in the conference, while the Knights had an eight-game winning streak snapped and fell to 9-4 and 4-1.

Ohberg ended the game with 101 assists during her two-plus seasons, trailing only Lindsay Abbott, Marilyn Farrell, Erica Geremia and Jennifer Willis.

Senior Elizabeth LaComb (Syracuse/West Genesee) and freshman Carly Stone (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) each netted a pair of goals for Cortland. Senior Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) recorded one goal and one assist, senior Nicole Bello (Camillus/West Genesee) and sophomore Katie Wolfe (East Amherst/Williamsville North) scored once and senior Elise Bennett (Webster/Webster Thomas) and sophomore Hannah Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee) chipped in with one assist apiece.

Junior goalie Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) turned aside 13 shots for the Red Dragons. Monaghan and Gentile each won seven draw controls, and Monaghan also collected four ground balls.

Maddie Lee scored twice for Geneseo, Erin Cregan and Liz Felix notched one goal each and Tara Basile recorded an assist. Goalie Claudia Coleates made 11 saves and registered three ground balls. Cregan scooped up three ground balls and caused three turnovers as did Lauren Corbett.

The game remained tight throughout much of the first half as Cortland held a 3-2 lead 17:02 into the contest. The Red Dragons closed the half by scoring four of the next five goals for a 7-3 advantage. LaComb and Ohberg each netted a pair of goals for Cortland.

The Red Dragons pulled away by scoring the first eight goals of the second half for a 15-3 lead with 15:05 left on the clock. Monaghan scored five times during the run and Ohberg picked up her 100th career assist on a Monaghan goal at 23:05. Felix stopped the streak at 13:16 before Wolfe finished off the scoring on a Bennett assist at 11:01 for the 16-4 final.
