CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland scored three goals in a six-minute span in the second half to break open a tight game and went on to earn a 5-2 victory versus Geneseo Friday afternoon in field hockey action at Stadium White. The Red Dragons improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Knights fell to 0-6 and 0-1.

Junior Anna Branch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) paced the Cortland offense with a pair of goals. Senior Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) and sophomore Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) each tallied one goal and one assist, sophomore Dani Barto (Nichols/Tioga Central) scored a goal and junior Meg Redmond (Accord/Rondout Valley) and sophomore Jess Gibaldi (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) recorded one assist apiece. Sophomore goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) turned aside nine shots.

Junior Giovanna Fasanello (Clarence) registered a goal and an assist for Geneseo with sophomore Maria Dillingham (Riverhead) adding a goal and sophomore Tess Necaise (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) collecting an assist. Junior goalie Nicole Gregg (Whitney Point) turned aside six shots.

The Red Dragons grabbed a 2-0 lead at the half as Barto scored her second goal of the year on a short-side blast from the left circle on a penalty corner at 29:05, and Branch tallied an unassisted goal at 33:31 after forcing a Geneseo turnover.

The Knights quickly cut the lead to 2-1 just 1:38 into the second half when Dillingham scored on a deflection at the left post for her team-high fourth goal of the season. Cortland then took control of the game with its three-goal barrage. Branch scored her second goal of the game with a shot right in front at 42:28. Stein then made it a 4-1 score with a one-time shot at the left post at 47:36 after a deflection by Gibaldi, and Welsh pushed the lead to 5-1 just 50 seconds later with a long blast through traffic on a penalty corner. Fasanello completed the scoring at 60:57, lifting a high shot over Reinoehl and into the upper part of the cage on a penalty corner.
