MORRISVILLE, N.Y. –
Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) scored with less than five minutes remaining in the first half as Cortland defeated host Morrisville State, 1-0, in SUNYAC field hockey action. The Red Dragons improved to 2-0 in league play and 5-2 overall.
Welsh scored her team high sixth goal of the season on a penalty corner play with 4:42 left in the opening half.
Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) set up the goal for her team-high seventh assist of the year.
Cortland outshot the Mustangs (1-7, 0-2 SUNYAC) by a 38-5 margin and earned all 20 of the game's penalty corner chances. Morrisville, however, had a good opportunity to tie the game in the 52nd minute, but a shot by Alisha Wittmer was turned away by a
Meg Redmond (Accord/Rondout Valley) defensive save.
Morrisville goalie Meredith Koziol made 16 saves to keep her team in the game. Morrisville defender Nicole Griender added a defensive save in the first half. Cortland goalie

Cortland will travel to nationally 13th-ranked Skidmore College Saturday at 12:30 p.m. for a non-league game.
