CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland opened 2-0 at Day 1 of the 32nd annual Red Dragon Women's Volleyball Classic with victories over Misercordia University and the University of Rochester.
The 12-team tournament features a predetermined schedule instead of pool play and championship brackets. Cortland will face Stockton University Saturday at 11 a.m. and Alfred University at 4 p.m. Cortland, Stockton and Alfred, along with Nazareth, are all 2-0 after the first day of competition.
Cortland swept Misericordia 25-15, 25-23, 25-21. Junior
Janine Patora (Salt Point/Arlington) finished with nine kills and 17 digs and junior
Valerie Fischer (Williston Park/Mineola) ended with eight kills, 11 digs and three blocks.
Junior
Courtney Silberer (Centereach) recorded seven kills and junior
Sarah Piacentini (Webster/Webster Schroeder) led the team with 21 assists. Sophomore
Alexandra Graff (Apex, NC) posted a team-high 18 digs and junior
Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) led the squad with four aces and four blocks.
The Red Dragons followed that victory with a 25-20, 22-25, 27-25, 25-16 four-set win over Rochester. Silberer finished with 16 kills and four blocks and Patora totaled 13 kills and 22 digs. Piacentini dished out 35 assists and added 16 digs and five blocks, May led the team with three aces and seven blocks, and Graff had a team-best 31 digs. As a team, Cortland finished with 12 blocks.
