Men's Soccer Drops Conference Opener at Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Oneonta men's soccer team scored three second-half goals and defeated Cortland, 3-0, in the SUNYAC opener for both schools Friday afternoon. The host Red Dragons won their sixth straight game, imrpoving to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The visiting Red Dragons fell to 5-2 and 0-1.

For Cortland, senior goalie Joe Brandofino (East Northport/Commack) made five saves in 79:21. Junior goalie Connor Young (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) played the final 10:39, stopping all three shots he faced on goal.

Dillon Johnson led the Oneonta offense with two goals and an assist. Witman Hernandez tallied one goal and one assist. Goalie Ryan Wilson registered five saves, and the host Red Dragons also recorded a "team" save.

After a scoreless first half, Johnson gave Oneonta a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute, driving a header into the right side of the goal past a diving Brandofino. In the 63rd minute, Johnson struck again, scoring on a chip shot that was deflected and snuck into the lower left corner of the goal.

Cortland's best chance to cut into the lead came in the 75th minute, but Wilson made a diving save on senior Nick Tata's (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) bending 30-yard shot. Less than three minutes later, Hernandez finished off the scoring with a sharp-angled shot from the left side for the 3-0 final.
