Red Dragons Swept by Brockport in SUNYAC Opener

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The Cortland women's volleyball team opened SUNYAC play with a 3-0 loss to host and defending league champion Brockport. The Golden Eagles won by set scores of 25-15, 25-22, 25-14.

Cortland (7-6, 0-1 SUNYAC) continues league action Saturday with matches versus Buffalo State at 10 a.m. and Oneonta at 12:30 p.m., both at Brockport.

Courtney Silberer (Centereach) led Cortland with eight kills and two blocks. Nicole Silberer (Centereach) added three kills and two blocks, while Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker), Valerie Fischer (Williston Park/Mineola) and Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) also totaled three kills each.

Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) finished with four aces and 10 digs. Alexandra Graff (Apex, NC) posted a team-high 14 digs, and Sarah Piacentini (Webster/Webster Schroeder) recorded 18 assists.

Sam Holdredge led Brockport (13-2, 1-0 SUNYAC) with nine kills and 11 digs. Brianna Richardson added eight kills and a .538 attack percentage in 13 attempts, and Noelle Poloncarz finished with 28 assists, three aces and 11 digs.

Cortland was tied 9-9 in the first set before Brockport went on a 6-0 run to take the lead for good. In the second set, the Red Dragons were within 16-15 before the Golden Eagles tallied four straight points. Cortland made a late comeback attempt as it cut a 24-19 deficit to 24-22 before a service error ended the set. Cortland led 10-7 in the third set before being done in by a 7-0 run that put the hosts up 14-10. Brockport's lead remained at least three points the remainder of the set.
