CORTLAND, N.Y. – Seniors
Tyler Kirschner (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) and
Nick Tata (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) tallied first-half goals as the Cortland men's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory versus Ithaca Wednesday night in non-conference action at Stadium Red. The Red Dragons improved to 3-0 with the win, while the Bombers fell to 0-3.
Junior
Drew DeJohn (Spencerport) collected an assist for Cortland, and senior goalie
Joe Brandofino (East Northport/Commack) made two saves in recording his second shutout of the season. Junior goalie Zach Jacobsen (Frederick, MD) registered six saves for Ithaca.
Kirschner scored what proved to be the game winner in the sixth minute. An Ithaca defender played the ball back to Jacobsen who could not cleanly handle the pass, and Kirschner was able to tap the loose ball into the open goal. Tata, who scored in his third straight game, made it a 2-0 score in the 23rd minute. DeJohn played a ball forward that eluded an Ithaca player, and Tata broke in alone on Jacobsen and finished the play with a shot inside the left post.
Ithaca's best chance to get on the scoreboard came in the 27th minute, but Brandofino denied a bid on the right side by Ithaca freshman Justinian Michaels (Sparkil/Don Bosco Prep), who struck a clean shot from 12 yards away.
Cortland created several quality chances in the second half, but Jacobsen turned aside four shots and an Ithaca defender cleared senior
David Sherman's (Huntington/John H. Glenn) header off the line after a corner kick.
