Emily McGurk swam a leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay team and placed second in two individual events
OSWEGO, N.Y. – Cortland won seven individual events, including three by
Angelica Ford (Elk Grove Village, IL/Elk Grove) and two by
Caroline Tighe (East Meadow), and the Red Dragons defeated host Oswego, 167-133, in women's swimming and diving dual-meet action.
Ford won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:19.33), 200-yard backstroke (2:17.01) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:19.94). Tighe won both 3-meter diving (241.15 points) and 1-meter diving (218.15 points).
Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.99) and
Jasmine Elmassry (Queens/Francis Lewis) was the winner in the 500-yard freestyle (5:38.47). Cortland also won the 200-yard medley relay with the combination of
Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman), Szewczyk,
Emily McGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) and
Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) finishing in 1:57.08.
Cortland swept the top three spots in two events. In the 1,000-yard freestyle, Ford was followed to the wall by
Rachel Noach (White Plains) in 11:34.90 and
Lauren McBrinn (Suffern/Paramus Catholic (NJ)) in 11:36.55. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Szewczyk finished first,
Vanessa Vegder (Dansville) was second (1:15.86) and
Emma Gulbin (Wall Township, NJ/Wall) placed third (1:17.15).
McGurk finished second in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:24.03) and 100-yard butterfly (1:04.80). Vegder was runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:39.60) in addition to the 100 breast, and Davey earned second-place finishes in both the 50-yard freestyle (26.32) and 100-yard freestyle (57.80).
Johnson was second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.87) and Elmassry placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.87), and the quartet of
Kalee Walden (Dryden), Johnson, Noach and
Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) placed second in 3:56.00.
Cortland will compete next in a dual meet at Division II Le Moyne College Saturday at 1 p.m.
