CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior
Kianna Gutenmann's (Clifton Park/Troy-Albany Ice Cats) second goal of the game with 3:51 remaining in regulation lifted the Cortland women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory versus Buffalo St. Friday afternoon in ECAC West action at Alumni Arena.
Freshman
Miranda Kolb (Watertown/Syracuse Nationals) recorded two assists for the Red Dragons (2-12, 1-8 ECAC West), and sophomore
Samantha Pippin (Allen Park, MI/Team Detroit) added an assist. Senior goalie
Kelly Farinella (Marlton, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) registered 30 saves, including 12 in the third period to clinch the win.
Junior Christine Harris (Mountain Top, PA/New Jersey Rockets) netted a goal for the Bengals (10-5-1, 5-4 ECAC West) off an assist by junior Erin Gehen (West Seneca/Cazenovia Chiefs). Junior goalie Justine Silva (Baldwin Park, CA/Anaheim Lady Ducks) made 16 saves.
Gutenmann gave Cortland the lead at 11:40 of the first period, one-timing a pass from Kolb into the open left side of the net at the side of the crease. The Bengals tied the score on the power play at 17:44 of the second period when Harris beat Farinella with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle through traffic.
Gutenmann tallied the game-winner at 16:09 of the third with her fourth goal of the season. Kolb carried the puck up the left boards and sent the puck in front where Gutenmann knocked a shot past Silva. Buffalo St. pulled Silva over the final 1:34 but could not get a shot on goal.
The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Cortland.
