Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cortland Defeats Brockport, 3-0, in SUNYAC Quarters with Second-Half Surge

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's soccer team scored three second-half goals, breaking a scoreless tie at the half, and defeated Brockport, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the SUNYAC Tournament. The third-seeded Red Dragons improved to 10-4-3 and advanced to face second-seeded Plattsburgh on the road in the semifinals on Nov. 1. The Golden Eagles fell to 9-7-2.

Freshman Alannah O'Shea (New Hyde Park/Herricks) paced the Cortland offense with the first two goals of her career. Junior Brenna Conover (Smithtown/Hauppauge) netted her team-high seventh goal of the season, and junior Sam Barringer (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and freshman Erin Valente (Latham/Shaker) each recorded an assist.

Junior goalie Abby Miller (Andover) made two saves for the Red Dragons, who posted their ninth shutout of the season. Freshman goalie Emma Nevers (Watertown) registered eight saves for Brockport.

The game was played in windy conditions as a strong breeze blew straight in from the south. Cortland played into the wind in the first half, outshooting the Golden Eagles, 9-4, but Nevers made five saves. Miller stopped one shot in the opening half.

The Red Dragons wasted little time in taking the lead in the second half, netting the game winner just 45 seconds into play. After a Cortland player was taken down in the box, Conover converted a penalty kick. In the 59th minute, O'Shea made it a 2-0 score, burying a 35-yard shot into the upper right corner for her first career goal. She added her second goal on a clean header off Barringer's corner-kick serve in the 67th minute. Brockport had a late chance to spoil the shutout, but Miller made a diving save on freshman Sarah Covell's (Saratoga Springs) shot on a loose ball from the box in the 87th minute.
