PITTSBURGH, PA. –
Carly Weigold (Mahopac/Millbrook Mustangs) scored with one minute, one second left in the third period as Cortland rallied in the final eight minutes for a 3-2 ECAC West women's ice hockey victory at Chatham University.
The Red Dragons (3-18-1, 2-12-1 ECAC West) and the host Cougars (5-16-1, 0-14-1) will play again at Chatham Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Chatham took a 2-1 lead on a Kirajean Frost goal 5:09 into the third. Cortland tied the game with 7:26 remaining when
Emily King (Tonawanda/Buffalo Regals) netted her third goal of the season, off an assist from
Katy Kennedy (East Greenbush/Troy-Albany Ice Cats).
Wiegold scored the game winner - her second of the game and fifth of the season - off an assist from
Olivia Monzel (Batavia, IL/Chicago Fury) with 1:01 left. Chatham pulled goalie Sydney Isbell for the final 41 seconds but was unable to tie the game.
Weigold's first goal of the game came in strange fashion to give Cortland a 1-0 lead 3:36 into the contest. With Cortland down a skater, the Red Dragons were called for a delayed penalty and Chatham pulled Isbell for an extra attacker. The Cougars, however, accidentally shot the puck into their vacated net, and Wiegold was credited with the goal as the last Red Dragon to touch the puck.
Chatham tied the game 6:10 into the second on a McKenzie Haskins unassisted power play goal.
Cortland goalie
Kelly Farinella (Marlton, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) finished with 20 saves and Isbell made 16 saves for Chatham.
