CORTLAND, N.Y. - Four different players scored goals to lead the nationally 13th-ranked Buffalo St. men's hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Cortland Friday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons dropped to 9-13-2 overall and 5-9-1 in the conference. The Bengals improved to 17-6-1 and 9-5-1.
Junior
Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes) led Cortland with a goal and an assist. and freshmen
Aidan Salerno (East Atlantic Beach/Soo Thunderbirds) and
Sean Perichak (Oakville, ON/Markham Royals) each added a goal. Juniors
Paul Fregeau (Los Angeles, CA/Des Moines Buccaneers),
Tommy Nolan (Mahopac/Connecticut Oilers) and
Darren McCormick (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and sophomore
Andrew Gleason (Vestal/Syracuse Stars) collected one assist apiece. Junior goalie
Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) registered 31 saves.
Senior Nick Berst (Depew/Port Colborne Pirates), sophomore Mac Wood (Simcoe, ON/Southern Oregon Spartans) and freshmen Zach Remers (Clarence/Wilkes Barre-Scranton Knights) and Jonathan Colley (Stouffville, ON/Newmarket Hurricanes) each netted a goal for Buffalo St. Freshman Colin O'Connor (Kankakee, IL/Atlanta Capitals) recorded two assists, and five others each picked up one assist. Senior goalie Mike DeLavergne (Pawling/Wilkes Barre-Scranton Knights) made 24 saves.
The Bengals grabbed a 2-0 first-period lead with goals from Wood and Berst just 1:16 apart a little past the halfway point of the period. Cortland answered with  Salerno's rebound goal at 15:30 and McCann's deflection in front 32 seconds later and the teams went into the first intermission tied at 2-2.
After a scoreless second period, Remers scored on a rebound at 2:39 of the third period to give Buffalo St. a 3-2 lead. Colley's goal from the slot after his face-off win at 7:23 put the Bengals ahead, 4-2. With just over three minutes remaining, Cortland pulled Weigman for an extra skater, and the move paid off with 32 seconds remaining on Perichak's one-timer right in front. The Red Dragons had one final chance with a faceoff in Buffalo St.'s zone with six seconds remaining, but the Bengals cleared the puck away to seal the win.
Cortland hosts Fredonia at 7 p.m. on Saturday with a potential conference playoff berth on the line.
