Ford Sets Another School Mark, McGurk Third in 100 Fly, on Friday at SUNYAC Meet

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senior Angelica Ford (Elk Grove Village, IL/Elk Grove) won a league title with a school record-setting performance for the second straight day and senior Emily McGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) finished third in the 100-yard butterfly during Friday's competition at the SUNYAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. The event, which is being held at Erie Community College's Flickinger Center, will conclude on Saturday.
 
Cortland has improved from fourth to third place in the team standings. Geneseo continues to lead the way with 607 points, followed by New Paltz (386), Cortland (336), Oneonta (275) and Brockport (216) in the top five.
 
Ford followed up her victory in the 200-yard individual medley Thursday with a win in the 400-yard individual medley Friday. Her finals time of 4:36.89 broke the previous school mark of 4:38.27 set by Abigail MacDonald in 2013.
 
McGurk placed third in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.93 seconds. Ford, McGurk, freshman Rachel Noach (White Plains) and freshman Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) combined for a third-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 8:01.07, while sophomore Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman), freshman Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland), McGurk and Davey finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:51.03).
 
Four other Red Dragons advanced to the finals in their individual events. Johnson finished fifth in the 100 fly (59.55), Szewczyk was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.90), freshman Emma Gulbin (Wall Township, NJ/Wall) placed sixth in the 100 breast (1:10.02), and senior Kelly Lambkin (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) was eighth in the 100 breast (1:10.82).
 
Cortland had four swimmers win "B" finals events for ninth-place overall finishes - freshman Jasmine Elmassry (Queens/Francis Lewis) in the 400 IM (4:57.46); Davey in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.24); freshman Vanessa Vegder (Dansville) in the 100 breast (1:11.61); and Johnson in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.55).
 
Freshman Erica Koumas (East Meadow) scored in two events with 10th-place showings in the 400 IM (4:59.32) and 100 fly (1:00.79). Freshman Darby LaFlamme (Niskayuna) placed 11th in the 100 back (1:01.59), junior Kathleen Gallagher (Pearl River) was 12th in the 400 IM (5:02.64), junior Kalee Walden (Dryden) finished 15th in the 100 fly (1:03.06), and freshman Lauren McBrinn (Suffern/Paramus Catholic (NJ)) rounded out Cortland's scorers on the evening with a 16th-place effort in the 200 free (2:04.78).
