Weigman Stones Bears in Cortland's 5-1 Win

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Junior goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) turned aside 46 shots, including all 31 he faced over the final two periods, as the Cortland men's ice hockey team defeated Potsdam, 5-1, Saturday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 9-11-1 overall and 5-7 in the conference with the win, while Bears fell to 6-14-2 and 1-11-1.

Junior Darren McCormick (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) led Cortland with two goals to reach 20 on the season. Junior Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes) and freshman Tony DeVito (Chicago, IL/New Jersey Titans) each tallied one goal and one assist, sophomore Mike Crowley (Buffalo/Springfield Blues) netted a goal and eight others collected one assist apiece.

Junior Dylan Vander Esch (San Jose, CA/Hartford Wolfpack) scored his team-high 16th goal for Potsdam. Juniors Jake Martin (Montreal, QC/Concordia) and Sean Kacerosky (Kendall Park, NJ/New York Bobcats) each recorded an assist. Sophomore goalie Nate Skidmore (Syracuse/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) made 22 saves.

Crowley gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at 15:24 of the first period with a wrist shot from the left circle. McCann made it a 2-0 score 69 seconds later with a shot from the slot. Vander Esch cut Cortland's lead to 2-1 with a deflection in front at 17:28.

McCormick's first goal of the night at 7:36 of the second period made it a 3-1 game. Just over three minutes later, the Bears had a two-man advantage for two minutes but could not capitalize. Potsdam ended the game 0-for-9 on the power play.

DeVito gave Cortland a 4-1 lead at 9:49 of the first period with a top-shelf backhand right in front before McCormick finished the scoring at 19:05 with Cortland skating on a two-man advantage.
