CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland won both relays and all 12 swimming events, including sweeps of the top three places five times, on its way to a 168-116 dual-meet victory over visiting Fredonia to wrap up its regular-season schedule.
Angelica Ford (Elk Grove Village, IL/Elk Grove) won the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.21) and 200-yard backstroke (2:17.46), and also had the best time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:19.04) as an exhibition entry.
Emily McGurk (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) took top honors in the 200-yard butterfly (2:20.89) and 100-yard butterfly (1:02.69), the latter in an exhibition role, and
Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) won both the 50-yard freestyle (26.26) and 100-yard freestyle (57.34) races.
Lauren McBrinn (Suffern/Paramus Catholic (NJ)) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:26.70),
Kelly Lambkin (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:40.76), and
Darby LaFlamme (Niskayuna) won the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.23).
Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) was the 100-yard breaststroke winner (1:12.32), while
Jasmine Elmassry (Queens/Francis Lewis) turned in the fastest time in the 500-yard freestyle (5:39.07) as an exhibition entry and placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:05.72).
The quartet of
Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman), Szewczyk,
Erica Koumas (East Meadow) and
Kalee Walden (Dryden) won the 200-yard medley relay (1:57.43), while Johnson, Walden, McGurk and Davey won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:44.77).
Cortland's top-three sweeps came in the following events:
100-yard backstroke: LaFlamme first, followed by
Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) in second (1:05.63) and
Rachel Noach (White Plains) in third (1:06.14)
100-yard breaststroke: Szewczyk first, followed by
Emma Gulbin (Wall Township, NJ/Wall) in second (1:14.39) and Lambkin third (1:15.14)
200-yard butterfly: McGurk first, followed by Koumas second (2:22.51) and Johnson third (2:27.60)
50-yard freestyle: Davey first, followed by Walden second (26.39) and Kanoza third (26.80)
100-yard butterfly: All as exhibition entries - McGurk first, Johnson second (1:03.05) and Koumas third (1:04.31)
Also for the Red Dragons, Noach was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:32.38), Kanoza placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:22.93) and Gulbin was second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:41.17). Walden finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (57.95) and
Vanessa Vegder (Dansville) finished second as an exhibition entry in the 500-yard freestyle (5:45.68). The foursome of Ford, Lambkin, McGurk and Davey completed a top-two sweep in the 200-yard medley relay with their second-place time of 1:57.73, just three tenths of a second behind their teammates' winning time.
Cortland celebrated "Senior Day" at the meet and recognized its three seniors - Ford, McGurk and Lambkin.
Cortland will compete at the SUNYAC Championships Feb. 15-18 at Erie Community College in Buffalo.
