Cortland Defeats 2016 World Series Participant IWU During Thursday Florida Split

KISSIMMEE, FLA. –  Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) allowed two runs and struck out a career-high seven batters over five and two thirds innings as Cortland defeated 2016 NCAA Division III World Series participant Illinois Wesleyan, 4-2, to open Thursday's action at the Rebel Spring Games. The Red Dragons dropped their second game of the day to William Paterson, 5-3, when the Pioneers scored three times in the bottom of the sixth.

Cortland (4-4) closes its Florida trip Friday with games versus St. Norbert (Wis.) at 9 a.m. and Ramapo (N.J.) at 1:30 p.m.

Cortland 4, Illinois Wesleyan 2

Lachall improved to 2-1 on the season after allowing six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in five and a third innings. She gave up a run in the top of the first and another in the sixth before being relieved with the bases loaded and two outs.

Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) struck out the first batter she faced to get out of that jam. In the seventh, she allowed a Summer Stitt one-out single, and with two outs Stephanie Prentice struck out but reached safely as the pitch was in the dirt. Van Dorn fanned the final hitter to earn her first save of the spring.

The Titans led 1-0 in the first when Jillian Runyon singled, stole second, and eventually scored on a Shelby Fulk RBI groundout. Cortland tied the game in the bottom of the third. Stephanie Tirone (Williamsville/Williamsville South) led off with a walk and pinch runner Amber Rice (Parish/A-P-W) moved to second on a Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy) sac bunt. With two outs, Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) hit an infield single behind the bag at second. The second baseman was unable to make a throw to first, and Rice never stopped running and beat the throw home.

Cortland grabbed a 3-1 lead in the fourth. Victoria Brown (Fresh Meadows/Archbishop Molloy) led off with a single and Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) bunted pinch runner Danielle Olive (Bethpage) to second. Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) hit a single to left center to drive in Olive, and she took second on the throw home. Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) singled to center to score Barbato.

The Red Dragons' final run came in the fifth. Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) singled and stole second. O'Gorman singled to short to advance Schoonmaker to third, and before the play ended starting heading to second. She got into a rundown, and Schoonmaker broke for home and beat the throw to finish off a double steal.

O'Gorman and Schoonmaker each finished 2-for-3, with one of Schoonmaker's two hits a double. Hoyt was 1-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch and RBI. Fulk finished 1-for-3 with a walk for the Titans (5-2 following the loss to Cortland) and Sam Berghoff had a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh. Mackenzie Marquis went the distance in the circle for IWU and allowed seven hits, one walk and four runs with two strikeouts.

William Paterson 5, Cortland 3

William Paterson (5-4) rallied to score three times in the bottom of the sixth to earn the victory. Vanessa Archibold started the inning by beating out a bunt and Rachel Wasilak singled through the left side. Kaitlyn Poretti sacrificed the runners to second and third, but Cortland starter Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) was able to get the next batter to ground out to first and briefly keep the score at 3-2. Salina Pellios, however, hit a flare just over third base that fell inside the foul line for a two-run single, and Kara Molnar followed with a deep RBI triple to right.

The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Nicole Fryer singled and moved to second on a passed ball, then took third on an Archibold bunt single. A Wasilak bunt single drove in Fryer, and Archibold was later able to score when Wasilak was thrown out trying to steal second.

Flint settled down to retire the last two batters of the first as well as the next seven batters she faced. She allowed a one-out infield single in the fourth to break that stretch of nine straight outs, and also hit a batter with one out in the fifth, but otherwise did not allow any baserunners until the Pioneers' sixth-inning surge.

Cortland cut its deficit to 2-1 in the top of the third. With one out, Schoonmaker bunted for a single and went to third on an O'Gorman double to right center. A two-out fielding error allowed Schoonmaker to score.

The Red Dragons plated two runs in the fifth to take the lead. The inning started with another Schoonmaker bunt single and a steal. With one out, Mikayla Shade (Glenmont/Bethlehem) beat out a slow grounder to the pitcher. On the play, Schoonmaker kept running and avoided the tag at home. There was a dramatic delay for a moment as Schoonmaker did not touch the plate, but the tag had not been applied, prompting the umpire to not make any signal until Schoonmaker finally alertly touched home. One out later, Churchill hit a deep blast to the base of the fence in left for a double to score pinch runner Olive from second.

After falling behind, Cortland started a comeback bid in the seventh when O'Gorman fouled off numerous pitches and eventually drew a leadoff walk on 18 pitches. WPU starter Gabrielle Castelli, however, finished off her compete game by inducing a fielder's choice, lineout and groundout. She improved to 3-0 on the season after giving up eight hits and three runs, two earned, with two walks and four strikeouts.

Flint gave up eight hits and five runs, three earned, in five and two thirds innings. She fanned two batters. Schoonmaker finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Churchill and Shade each went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and O'Gorman went 1-for-3 with a walk and double. For William Paterson, Archibold and Wasilak each were 2-for-3, with Archibold scoring two runs.
