KISSIMMEE, FLA. – Cortland mounted a pair of seventh-inning rallies to earn victories over St. Norbert College (Wis.) and Ramapo College (N.J.) to wrap up its week at the Rebel Spring Games softball tournament. The Red Dragons scored five runs in the top of the seventh to defeat St. Norbert, 8-5, and they scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to edge Ramapo, 4-3.
Cortland improved to 6-4 with the wins, including a 6-1 mark after starting the season 0-3. The Red Dragons are scheduled, weather permitting, to play doubleheaders next Friday at DeSales University in Pennsylvania and Saturday at The College of New Jersey.
Cortland 8, St. Norbert 5
Cortland trailed 5-3 entering its final at-bat in the top of the seventh.
Ericka Sadowski (Liverpool) beat out a grounder to short to start the inning and
Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy) singled through the left side.
Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and
Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) grounded out to second to drive in a run.
Mikayla Shade (Glenmont/Bethlehem) followed with a two-run single up the middle to give the red Dragons a 6-5 lead. With two outs,
Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) hit an RBI single up the middle and
Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) blasted an RBI triple to deep right.
Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford), who earned the win in relief, allowed a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh before getting a flyout and a fielder's choice to end the game.
Cortland led 3-0 early on a
Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) fielder's choice RBI grounder in the first and RBI singles by Phillips and O'Gorman in the second. The Green Knights got on the board in the fourth when Amy McBride was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but Van Dorn entered at that point and got a fielder's choice grounder to second to end the threat.
St. Norbert took the lead with a four-run fifth inning. Amanda Diedrich singled in a run, and three batters later Leigh Grall hit a three-run double to right center.
Four Red Dragons finished with multiple hits. Phillips went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs, Sadowski was 2-for-3, Shade went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Hoyt was 2-for-4 with a triple and RBI.
Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) started and allowed two hits, four walks and one run in three and two thirds innings with two strikeouts.
For St. Norbert (1-6), Grall ended 3-for4 with a double and three RBI and Carley Frauenhoff was 1-for-2 with two walks. Sydney Pfotenhauer went the distance in the circle for the Green Knights and allowed eight runs on 12 hits.
Cortland 4, Ramapo 3
Cortland entered the bottom of the sixth down 3-1 before rallying for the victory. The Red Dragons put up a run in the sixth on a two-out throwing error on a ball hit in front of the plate by
Amber Rice (Parish/A-P-W) with runners on second and third.
The winning rally started in the seventh with a Schoonmaker single through the right side against Ramapo starter Christina Brizek. Paige Merle entered in relief and O'Gorman bunted Schoonmaker to second. After a wild pitch advanced Schoonmaker to third, Shade drew a walk and Katrina Buczkowski entered to pitch.
Churchill hit a fly ball to right that initially looked like it was going to be a medium-range flyout, but the wind blew the ball back in toward the infield and the right fielder lunged and was unable to make the catch. The play was ruled a single and allowed Schoonmaker to score the tying run. A passed ball advanced the runners to second and third and, after a strikeout for the second out, a wild pitch allowed Shade to score on a close play at the plate to give Cortland the victory.
Cortland led 1-0 in the first on a Schoonmaker double, a groundout, and an RBI grounder by Shade that was misplayed by the first baseman. Ramapo knotted the game in the top of the third when SiSi Marchinski led off with a double and eventually scored on an Ally Spellman single up the middle.
The Roadrunners (8-4) grabbed the lead with two runs in the fourth. Harper Patsko led off with an infield single, went to second on a wild pitch, and took third on a passed ball. She scored on a one-out single by Kristen Ruggiero.
Machinski followed with a single, and Jackie Howarth hit a ground-rule double to right center to score Ruggiero. Cortland caught a break with the ball bouncing over the fence since if it didn't, Machinski would likely have scored on the play. Instead, Van Dorn entered in relief and recorded a strikeout and a flyout to strand runners on second and third and keep the Red Dragons' deficit at 3-1.
Van Dorn, who relieved
Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley), earned her second win of the day by allowing just one hit and one walk and fanning three batters over the final three and two thirds innings. Schoonmaker, Churchill and Hoyt each finished 2-for-4 at the plate, with Schoonmaker doubling and scoring twice. Barbato was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
For Ramapo, Machinski ended 2-for-3 with a double and Spellman and Nicole Hernandez each went 2-for-4. Brizek received a no decision after allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits in six innings. She struck out three. Merle was tagged with the loss after being responsible for the batter who eventually scored the winning run.
