Cortland Sweeps Buffalo St. in Pair of Five-Inning Games to Open SUNYAC Play

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland combined for 23 runs on 23 hits and seniors Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) and Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) each tossed three-hitters as the Red Dragons swept visiting Buffalo State, 14-2 and 9-0, to open SUNYAC play. Both games were called after five innings due to the eight-run rule.

Cortland (10-6, 2-0 SUNYAC) will host Fredonia Sunday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.

Cortland 14, Buffalo St. 2 (5 inn.)

Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) went 3-for-3 with a homer, triple, three RBI and three runs scored to lead Cortland's 14-hit attack in the opener. Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) finished 3-for-4 with a double, Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) was 2-for-2 with a double, walk, two RBI and two runs scored, and Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Also for the Red Dragons, Chelsea Palma (Holbrook/Sachem North) finished 1-for-2 with four RBI and two runs scored and Victoria Brown (Fresh Meadows/Archbishop Molloy) was 1-for-1 with a double, walk and two RBI. Lachall allowed two unearned runs and three hits with one walk and one strikeout over five innings to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Nicole Adams and Emily Frajdofer each went 1-for-2 for Buffalo State. Scarlett Whitman took the loss after allowing 12 runs, 10 earned, in one-plus innings of work.

Cortland jumped out quickly in the opener with five runs in the first and seven in the second to take a 12-1 lead. The first inning featured a Hoyt RBI double, a Churchill RBI single, and a Barbato three-run homer. After sending 10 batters to the plate in the first, Cortland paraded 13 hitters into the batter's box in the second. The big blows in that seven-run frame were back-to-back RBI singles by Hoyt and Churchill, a Brown two-run double, and Palma's three-run homer for her first collegiate round-tripper.

The Red Dragons' final runs came in the third when Barbato tripled and scored on a Palma sacrifice fly, with Palma safe on an error on the play, followed two batters later by a Schoonmaker RBI double.

Both of Buffalo State's runs came via error - one in the third and one in the fourth. The teams combined to commit nine errors in the contest - five by Cortland.

Cortland 9, Buffalo St. 0 (5 inn.)

The Red Dragons once again got off to a fast start. Cortland scored four times in the first on a Mikayla Shade (Glenmont/Bethlehem) RBI double, a Churchill RBI single, and back-to-back run-scoring doubles by Barbato and Brown.

The lead grew to 9-0 with five runs in the third. A bases-loaded error allowed one run to score, followed by a Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) RBI single and Shade two-run double.

Shade finished 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBI. Barbato was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs and Churchill ended 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. Flint upped her season record to 2-3 with her three-hit shutout. She walked two and struck out four.
