#15 Women's Lacrosse Hangs on for 13-10 Win vs. Geneseo

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 15th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team scored two late goals in holding off Geneseo, 13-10, in SUNYAC action Saturday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while the Knights dropped to 5-7 and 2-3.

Sophomore Carly Stone (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) led Cortland with four goals. Freshman Lexie Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) netted three goals. Freshman Molly Newton (Skaneateles) tallied two goals and one assist, senior Nicolette Tortorici (Deer Park) scored twice, senior Makenzie Annable (Navarino/Onondaga) and junior Jaycie Annable (Navarino/Onondaga) each notched a goal and juniot Megan Gonzalez (Miller Place) chipped in with an assist.

Senior goalie Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) turned aside 10 shots for the Red Dragons. Meager caused three turnovers, Tortorici collected three ground balls and nine different players secured a draw control.

Junior Erin Cregan (Rochester/Brighton) paced Geneseo's offense with three goals. Freshman Tessa Doody (Tully) totaled two goals and one assist, juniors Rachel Fisher (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) and Hannah Millich (Black River/Carthage) each scored twice and sophomore Maddie Lee (Massapequa) added one goal and one assist.

Sophomore goalie Tess McFadden (Pleasantville) made eight saves for the Knights. Cregan recorded three ground balls, four draws and three caused turnovers, while sophomore Carly Cullen (Wantagh) won five draws.

Cortland led 6-5 at the half as neither team could grab more than a one-goal lead in the opening 30 minutes. Stone and Newton each scored twice for the Red Dragons, and Millich netted a pair of goals for Geneseo. Beshlian made seven of her saves in the first half.

After Cortland went up, 8-5, with two quick goals to start the second half, the Knights tallied three in a row in less than a two-minute span to knot the score at 8-8 with 20:36 to play. The Red Dragons then went ahead 10-8 before Cregan cut the score to 10-9 at the 8:11 mark. Meager and Doody traded free-position goals, and the Cortland lead stood at 11-10 with 2:58 remaining. Geneseo won the ensuing draw control, but Meager forced a turnover, which eventually led to Tortorici's goal at 1:16. The Red Dragons secured the draw control and possessed the ball until earning two free positions in the closing seconds with Stone scoring on the second chance with two seconds remaining to complete the scoring.
