CORTLAND, N.Y. - Scranton came from behind to win the final two sets and the unbeaten Royals defeated host Cortland in a five-set thriller that lasted more than two hours at Corey Gymnasium.
Scranton (10-0) won 23-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 15-7 behind Kristin Kirwan's 23 kills and Megan Monastra's 15 kills. Kirwan also added 15 digs and three aces and Regina Schetroma led the team with 16 digs.
Cortland (4-6) was paced by
Courtney Silberer (Centereach) with 13 kills.
Jessica Allen (Syracuse/West Genesee) totaled 10 kills and six blocks,
Nicole Silberer (Centereach) finished with nine kills and 10 digs, and
Alexandra Graff (Apex, NC) rang up 28 digs and three aces.
Cortland finished the match with 14 team blocks. In addition to Allen's six blocks (one solo, five assisted),
Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) ended with eight blocks (two solo, six assisted) and
Margorie Didas (Dansville) tallied seven blocks (all assisted).
Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) served five aces and added 13 assists and eight digs, and
Valerie Fischer (Williston Park/Mineola) led the Red Dragons with 18 assists.
Cortland led 21-15 in the first set before Scranton came back to tie it at 22-22. The Red Dragons scored the next two points on an error, followed by a block by May and Didas. After a service error, Cortland won the set on an Allen kill.
In the second set, Cortland grabbed an early 13-6 lead, but the Royals mounted a 12-3 run to take an 18-16 lead. Cortland was still within two at 20-18 but got no closer.
The third set was tied 18-18 before a 5-0 Cortland run put the Red Dragons up 23-18. Scranton clawed back to within 23-22 on a Morgan Rentzheimer ace, but Cortland scored the next point on an error and won the set on a
Nicole Silberer kill.
Cortland trailed 4-0 early in the fourth, but tied at 7-7, 9-9 and 10-10. Scranton led 15-11 on a Kirwan kill. Cortland got back to within 16-15, and the teams traded points up through a 19-18 Scranton lead. The Royals took control with three straight points, the last on a Monastra kill, and led by at least two the rest of the set.
Scranton raced out to a 5-2 lead in the fifth set, then later took control with a 4-0 run on a Kirwan kill, two kills by Rentzheimer and a Kirwan ace to take a 9-3 advantage. The margin remained at least five from that point.
Cortland returns to action next Tuesday, Sept. 19, when it hosts Elmira in a 6 p.m. match.
