GENEVA, N.Y. – The nationally 13th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team built a 3-0 lead midway through the second half and held on for a 3-2 victory over fourth-ranked Brandeis, an NCAA Div. III "Final Four" team in 2016, during day one of the Hobart Tournament.
Junior
Jake Keller (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) led the Red Dragons with a goal and an assist in his first career game at Cortland. Juniors Migell Ormsby (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) and
Michael Miner (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) added goals, and sophomore
Garrett Sweeney (Smithtown/Smithtown West) contributed an assist. Senior goalie
Connor Young (Bayport-Bayport Bluepoint) registered nine saves.
Andrew Allen and Mike Lynch each netted a goal for the Judges, while Patrick Flahive collected an assist. Goalie Ben Woodhouse made two saves.
Ormsby gave Cortland a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. After taking a short pass from Keller, Ormsby faked a defender at the top of the box and beat Woodhouse for his first career goal as a Red Dragon. Keller made it a 2-0 score in the 50th minute when he deposited a shot in an open goal after an errant touch by Woodhouse.
Miner's goal, which proved to be the game winner, came in the 74th minute on a header from the left side off a cross from Sweeney. Allen put Brandeis on the scoreboard just 16 seconds later with a shot from the top of the box, and Lynch's goal in the 86th minute off a flurry in front pulled the Judges to within 3-2. Brandeis had one final chance to score the equalizer, but Young made a save in the 88th minute to seal the Cortland win.
The Red Dragons face E. Connecticut St., Sunday at 1 p.m., in the pre-determined schedule.
