Red Dragons Split Two Matches Saturday, Finish 2-2 at Own Tourney

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland finished with a 2-2 record at its own 12-team Red Dragon Women's Volleyball Classic after falling in four sets to Rochester and winning in three sets over Utica during Saturday's action.

Nationally 13th-ranked Juniata won the tournament title with a 4-0 record. Rochester and Stockton each finished 3-1, while Cortland was one of seven schools to conclude the weekend with a 2-2 mark.

Rochester defeated Cortland 25-19, 25-12, 14-25, 25-17 during the opening rotation of matches Saturday morning. The Red Dragons were led by Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) and Nicole Silberer (Centereach) with nine kills apiece. All-tournament selection Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) ended with 28 assists, 16 digs and three aces.

Also for Cortland against the Yellowjackets, Jessica Allen (Syracuse/West Genesee) and Courtney Silberer (Centereach) each put down seven kills, with Allen also totaling four blocks. Kiersten Cote (East Rockaway/Kellenberg) finished with 14 digs.

Cortland closed the tournament with a 25-8, 25-17, 25-15 win over Utica behind six kills apiece from Lindsay Kirk (Lake Grove/Sachem North) and Margorie Didas (Dansville). Didas had no errors in 10 attempts for a .600 attack percentage. Deja Smith (Suffern) and Courtney Silberer added five kills each, and Amelio ended with 28 assists, 10 digs and two aces.

The Red Dragons will travel to face SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. in a non-league match.
