MARCY, N.Y. - Cortland rallied from late deficits in each of the first two sets and the Red Dragons went on to sweep host SUNY Poly, 25-23, 25-23, 25-15, in a non-league women's volleyball match. Cortland improved to 3-2 with the victory.
Nicole Silberer (Centereach) led Cortland with 10 kills and seven digs.
Courtney Silberer (Centereach) added six kills and two aces, while
Jessica Allen (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished with six kills, a .400 attack percentage and two blocks.
Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) dished out 20 assists and
Deja Smith (Suffern) served three aces.
The Wildcats (0-4) were led by Makayla Hulett's seven kills and Charlotte Rutnik's four aces. Karlie King totaled four kills and nine digs.
Cortland led much of the first set, leading by 14-6 and 18-11 margins, each after Nicole Silberer kills. SUNY Poly, however, went on a 9-1 run to take a 20-19 lead, and the hosts were up 23-20 after back-to-back Samantha Henry aces.
The Red Dragons clawed back after a service error, a Courtney Silberer ace, and a SUNY Poly attack error to tie the score. Another error put Cortland ahead, and another ace ended the set.
The second set followed a similar story line as Cortland led 11-4 early only to see SUNY Poly come back and eventually take a 20-18 lead. The Red Dragons regrouped and scored five straight points, including two Smith aces and two Courtney Silberer kills, to take a 23-20 lead. The Wildcats rattled off three straight points on Cortland misplays to tie the set, but an error of their own put Cortland back out in front, and a block by Allen and
Valerie Fischer (Williston Park/Mineola) resulted in the set-clinching point.
Cortland never trailed in the third set, but there was still some early drama. The Red Dragons grabbed an early 10-3 lead, but the Wildcats clawed back to cut the lead to 13-11 on a King kill. Cortland rebounded with a 4-0 run that featured kills by Allen and Nicole Silberer, and the lead was at least five points the rest of the way.
Cortland will compete at the Muhlenberg College Buttermaker Tournament Friday and Saturday in Allentown, Pa. The Red Dragons begin action Friday at 3 p.m. versus the host school, followed by a match versus Stevenson University, and Saturday's action will include matchups with Pennsylvania schools Neumann and Cabrini.
