Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Hats off to Conover in Cortland's 3-2 OT Win at Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. – Junior Brenna Conover's (Smithtown/Hauppauge) third goal of the game early in overtime lifted the Cortland women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory at Rutgers-Newark Sunday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 1-0-1 with the win, while the Scarlet Raiders dropped to 1-1.

Conover's hat trick was the second of her career, having first accomplished the feat in a win over Ithaca College in 2015. Freshman Janessa Factor (Farmingville/Sachem East) recorded her first point as a Red Dragon with an assist in the game. Freshman Danika Svendsen (Stillwater) started in goal, making one save in the first half. Junior Abby Miller (Andover) earned the win, turning aside two shots over the final 46:55.

Haley Savva and Sabrina Solorzano netted the goals for Rutgers-Newark. Juliana Ceballos assisted on both scores. Goalie Diana Carvalho registered five saves.

Savva gave the Scarlet Raiders a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute on a rebound goal after Svendsen denied a shot by Ceballos. Conover notched her first goal of the game in the 34th minute also on a rebound as Factor's initial shot was turned away by Carvalho.

Rutgers-Newark regained the lead in the 66th minute on Solorzano's one-time shot into the right side of the goal. With time winding down in regulation, Conover collected a loose ball at the top of the box and deposited a shot into the upper right in the 84th minute to send the game into extra time. Less than two minutes into overtime, Cortland was awarded a penalty kick after a Scarlet Raider foul in the box, and Conover delivered the game winner to complete the hat trick and the Cortland victory.
