Red Dragons Tame Wildcats in Non-Conference Action, 3-1

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Three different players scored goals, and sophomore goalie Nick Modica (Suffern/New Jersey Hitmen) earned his first career victory as the Cortland men's hockey team defeated Johnson & Wales, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Arena.

Junior Andrew Gleason (Vestal/Syracuse Stars), sophomore Stefano Alonzi (Maple, ON/Burlington Cougars) and freshman Tom Rirchie (Spencerport/New York PAL Islanders) each netted a goal for the Red Dragons (6-9). Freshman Louis DiMatteo (Nobleton, ON/Trenton Golden Hawks) recorded two assists, while senior Tommy Nolan (Mahopac/Connecticut Oilers), junior Mike Crowley (Buffalo/Springfield Blues) and sophomore Douglas Elgstam (Stockholm, Sweden/New Jersey Rockets) collected one assist apiece. Modica stopped 15-of-16 shots.

Junior Zachary England (Redbank, NJ/New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) scored the goal for the Wildcats (5-12). Freshman Jordon Stone (Parker, CO/Utah Outliers) assisted on the play. Freshman goalie Mike Rockwell (Poughquag/Hartford Jr. Wolfpack) registered 39 saves.

Alonzi gave Cortland the lead at 16:8 of the first period with a wrist shot through traffic from the right side after Crowley won a clean faceoff. Gleason made it a 2-0 game at 5:01 of the second period, scoring from the left circle on the power play. England pulled the Wildcats to within 2-1 at 17:01 when his deflection in front snuck by Modica.

Ritchie notched an insurance goal on the power play just 1:51 into the third period, knocking in a loose puck in front. The Red Dragons had an excellent chance to add to their lead minutes later when the Wildcats took a major penalty and also were whistled for a minor but could not capitalize. Johnson & Wales pulled Rockwell for an extra skater with 1:36 to play but failed to cut into Cortland's lead.
