Red Dragons Fall to Roos, 4-2, at Home

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Canton men's hockey team scored four unanswered goals over the second and third periods and defeated Cortland, 4-2, in non-conference action Friday night at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons dropped to 7-11 with the setback. The Kangaroos improved to 6-12-2 with the win.

Senior Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) and freshman Michael Faliero (West Seneca/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) each netted a goal for Cortland. Senior Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes), sophomore Sean Perichak (Oakville, ON/Markham Royals) and freshman Alex Storjohann (Anthem, AZ/Kirkland Lake) collected one assist apiece. Senior goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) turned aside 24 shots.

Senior Ben Beasley (Burlington, ON/Smith Falls Bears) led four Canton goal scorers with a goal and an assist. Juniors Joey Vocino, Zach Pease and Joe Deveny also added goals, while senior Josh Sova (Oswego/Syracuse Stampede) recorded two assists. Sophomore goalie Austin Washkurak (Oakville, ON/Burlington Cougars) made 31 saves.

Cortland took a 2-0 lead after the first period. Broderick opened the scoring at 2:01 blasting a shot through traffic after Perichak won a clean faceoff back to him. Faliero then tallied his sixth goal of the season at 17:41 with a wrist shot from the right side.

Beasley cut Cortland's lead to 2-1 just 41 seconds into the second period five seconds after a Cortland penalty expired. Vocino tied the game at 16:58 with a backhand goal in front. Pease scored the game-winning goal on a deflection at 1:09 of the third period while the Kangaroos were skating on a five-minute power play. In the late stages, the Red Dragons pulled Weigman for an extra skater, but Deveny scored an empty-net goal at 18:19. After a Canton penalty eight seconds later, Cortland again pulled Weigman for an extra attacker but could not cut into its deficit.
