Cortland Hangs on for 2-1 Non-Conference Win vs. Canton

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland men's hockey team held Canton to 0-for-8 on the power play and picked up goals from sophomore Nico Gonzalez (Rochester/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) and senior Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes) in defeating Canton, 2-1, in non-conference play Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.

Gonzalez netted his first goal of the season, while McCann scored his third for the Red Dragons (8-11). Senior Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders), sophomore Sean Perichak (Oakville, ON/Markham Royals) and freshmen Michael Faliero (West Seneca/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and Alex Storjohann (Anthem, AZ/Kirkland Lake) each picked up an assist. Senior goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) stopped 31 shots.

Senior Kasey Kulczycki (Montreal, QC/Kanata Stallions) scored his first goal of the season for the Kangaroos (6-13-2). Junior Dylan Rosen (Clarkston, MI/Kirkland Lake) and sophomore Tyler Bullard (Ballston Spa/Northern Cyclones) assisted on the score. Sophomore goalie Austin Washkurak (Oakville, ON/Burlington Cougars) made 16 saves.

In a first period that featured nine penalties, Gonzalez scored the lone goal when he finished off a 2-on-1 for the Red Dragons at 9:24. McCann scored what proved to be the game winner at 12:04 of the second period. After a scramble in front of the net, Faliero fed a pass from behind the goal to McCann, who beat Washkurak right in front.

Kulczycki cut the Red Dragon lead to 2-1 at 8:12 of the third period with a goal right in front. The Kangaroos did not convert on a power-play chance with just under six minutes remaining, then pulled Washkurak for an extra skater with 58 seconds left on the clock. Canton pressured in the closing seconds, but Weigman made key saves to preserve the win before a rash of penalties were handed out after the final horn.
