Cortland Men Reach Regional Levels Seven Times at Cornell Kane Invitational

Austen Johnson anchored the 4x400-meter relay team that qualified for regionals with a second-place time of 3:26.84
ITHACA, N.Y. – Cortland's men recorded seven All-Atlantic Regional Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) qualifying performances, let by two national top-12 efforts in the triple jump, as the nationally 10th-ranked Red Dragons competed at the Cornell University Kane Invitational.

Dawan Jones (Buffalo/Tapestry Charter) finished second in the triple jump with an indoor personal best of 14.79 meters (48' 6.25"). The performance ranks him second nationally in Division III as well as second in the region. C.J. White (Middletown) placed third in the triple jump at 14.26 meters (46' 9.5") and currently ranks 12th nationally and seventh regionally.

Cortland's 4x400-meter relay team of Easton Reagan (Schenectady/Schalmont), Connor Lewis (Glen Ridge), Ricky Castello (New Rochelle) and Austen Johnson (Jamestown) finished second out of 19 entries in 3:26.84. They are one of only three 4x400 teams so far this winter to meet the Atlantic Region standard.

Reagan met regional standards in the 400-meter dash with his time of 50.80 seconds that placed him third out of 45 competitors at the Cornell meet. Johnson was fifth in 51.08 seconds, Zach Kashmer (Chili/Churchville-Chili) was seventh (52.19) and Lewis placed eighth (52.19).

Wendell Brand (Sleepy Hollow) currently ranks 10th in the region in the long jump after his effort of 6.77 meters (22' 2.5") that placed his seventh out of 19 competitors. Dev Williams (Syracuse/Corcoran) was ninth at 6.51 meters (21' 4.25"), which is not a regional qualifier. However, Williams still ranks ninth regionally with his performance of 6.82 meters from a meet in December.

Storm Malone (Harrison/Highland) and Micheal Outing (Farmingdale) each meet AARTFC standards in the 60-meter hurdles. Malone placed fourth of 25 in 8.37 seconds and Outing was seventh in 8.49 seconds (8.47 prelims). Malone is second regionally and Outing fifth based on earlier performances. Also in the hurdles, John Martin (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) finished ninth (8.84) and Isaiah Brooks (Minoa/East Syracuse-Minoa) was 11th (8.97).

Peyton Lalone (Ogdensburg/Ogdensburg Free Academy) and Liam Joyce (Dryden) each turned in a pair of top-eight finishes. Lalone was second of 48 in the 200-meter dash (23.05) and sixth of 30 in the 60-meter dash (7.20). Joyce was seventh in the 60-meter dash (7.30) and eighth in the 200-meter dash (23.97).

The 4x800-meter relay unit of Amauris Olivo (Bronx/Urban Assembly School for Career in Sports), Richard Samuels (Wallkill), Nolan Vest (Coram/Longwood) and James Forte (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) won the event in 8:20.53. Vest finished fourth out of 63 runners in the mile run in 4:26.34. Samuels and Olivo were two of three Red Dragons in the top 10 out of 30 runners in the 800 meters. Samuels finished third (1:59.52), Olivo was sixth (2:02.02), and Cabel McCandless (Lindenhurst) placed 10th (2:05.05).

Nick Vachon (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) finished second in the high jump after clearing 1.90 meters (6' 2.75"). Luke Shively (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman) and Matt Greenlaw (Warwick/Warwick Valley) each posted heights of 4.35 meters (14' 3.25") in the pole vault. Shively officially finished fifth out of 23 and Greenlaw was ninth since Shively cleared the height on his first attempt and Greenlaw on his second try.

Also for the Red Dragons, Brent DiVittorio (Brewster) finished third in the 200-meter dash (23.50) and Tyler Hochadel (Hamburg/Frontier) placed sixth in the shot put (13.06 meters/42' 10.25").

COACH'S CORNER (comments from head coach Steve Patrick about the men's and women's meets)

"We're obviously impressed with Harley Buczkowski to go out in the second meet of the semester and throw such a big personal best and a new school record!  She's worked very hard, so it is great to see her have that sort of an improvement.  Our men's long jumpers, Dev Williams and Wendell Brand, had a really nice first meet of the semester!  Both of those guys have only been back training with us this week, so we have had a lot of rust to scrape off.  Our distance runners for both the men and women put together some really nice races, which was great to see, led by lifetime bests from Nolan Vest in the mile and Sara Billings in the 3,000. Across the team we got to see some very good steps in the right direction which leaves us excited for the upcoming weeks!"
