Cortland Wins at Fisher, 3-2, on Boeltz Overtime Goal

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Freshman Chrissy Boeltz (Greene) scored her first two collegiate goals, including the game winner just over five minutes into the first sudden-victory overtime period, as Cortland defeated host St. John Fisher, 3-2, in a non-league contest.

With the teams playing 7 vs. 7 in the first extra session, Molly Quinlan (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) beat her defender on the right side of the circle and sent a crossing pass to Boeltz for the winning goal from about eight yards out with 4:59 left. Boeltz entered the game having taken only two shots this fall.

Cortland (8-5) took a pair of one-goal leads in the contest but was caught twice by the Cardinals (8-4). Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) opened the scoring 8:56 into the game off an assist from Jessica Welsh (Hamilton). Fisher tied the game when Lauren Fazio deflected in a ball from Kelly Bergamo in the 18th minute.

Cortland regained the lead with 21:55 left in regulation. A shot by Welsh was saved by Fisher goalie Ashley Maynard, but Boeltz blasted in the rebound from the left side. The Cardinals tied the game with 10:39 left on Fazio's second goal of the game, a deflection of a ball hit by Bre Shocker.

Both teams had good looks to win the game late in regulation. A shot by Quinlan with 2:12 remaining went just wide right, and Cortland goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) stopped a shot by Gianna Palma during a flurry in front of the cage with about a minute left. Fisher earned a penalty corner on the play, but only managed one shot from that opportunity that was blocked by a defender.

Reinoehl made one save in overtime and finished with seven for the game. Maynard recorded three saves and Abby Harris had a first-half defensive save for the hosts. Fisher outshot Cortland, 18-12, and earned 16 penalty corners to five for the Red Dragons.

Cortland will travel to Morrisville State for a SUNYAC contest Friday at 4 p.m.
