CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Senior Migell Ormsby (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) scored his sixth goal of the season in the first half and Cortland held off a flurry of Fredonia scoring opportunities late in the second half as the nationally ninth-ranked Red Dragons defeated the Blue Devils, 1-0, in SUNYAC men's soccer action Friday afternoon at the Stadium Complex.

Freshman Anthony Ruggiero (Holtsville/Sachem East) assisted on the game-winning goal. Junior goalie Sean Kelly (Coram/Newfield) registered five saves for Cortland (11-1-2, 5-1 SUNYAC), several of the spectacular variety, in posting his ninth shutout of the season. Junior goalie Ty Bentham (Columbus, IN/Columbus North) turned aside six shots for Fredonia (4-8-1, 1-5).

The Red Dragons controlled much of the play in the first half, outshooting the Blue Devils, 6-0, during the 45 minutes. Ormsby gave Cortland the lead in the 35th minute when he tucked a sharp-angled shot from the left side inside the right post.

 The second-half momentum swung in favor of Fredonia just past the midway point as the Blue Devils created multiple scoring chances. In the 71st minute, junior Conrad Rathbun (Naples) just missed wide left with a shot from the right side through traffic. Four minutes later, Kelly made a leaping save on Rathbun's header, punching the shot over the crossbar. After the ensuing corner kick, Kelly denied freshman Robert Aboagye (Bronx/Manhattan Center for Science and Math) with a sliding save on a point-blank shot off a loose ball.

The Red Dragons were unable to clear the ball out of danger, and Fredonia sophomore Kevin Loftus (Lancaster) drove a clean look from the left side off the right post that Kelly corralled. In the 83rd minute, Cortland had a golden chance to net an insurance goal, but sophomore Eli Yasuna's (Sherborn, MA/Dover-Sherborn) shot from 18 yards away hit squarely off the left post. The Blue Devils continued to pressure, moving every field player into Cortland's defensive end. In the 88th minute, junior Chad Gilson (Olcott/Newfane) fired a shot from deep in the box that Kelly stopped. The rebound kicked left to unmarked freshman Cole Teelin (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius), who misfired wide left as Cortland held on for the victory.
