CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Senior
Migell Ormsby (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton) scored a pair of first-half goals to lead the nationally ninth-ranked Cortland men's soccer team to a 2-0 home victory versus Buffalo St. Saturday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 12-1-2 overall and 6-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Bengals fell to 8-4-2 and 3-2-2.
Juniors
Jake Keller (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) and
Miguel Tunas (Carmel/North Salem) each recorded an assist for the Red Dragons. Junior goalie
Sean Kelly (Coram/Newfield) stopped two shots in posting his 10th shutout of the season. Senior goalie Andreas Queen (Stone Ridge/Rondout Valley) made one save for the Bengals.
Ormsby nearly gave Cortland a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, but his shot from the left side toward an open goal was cleared off the goal line and over the goal by a Buffalo St. defender. In the 34th minute, Ormsby successfully generated a chance in the middle of the box, putting a shot inside the left post. He then notched his eighth goal of the season in the 44th minute. Tunas served a long pass over the top of the Buffalo St. defense. Ormsby ran onto the pass, beat Queen one-on-one and tucked a shot into the open goal.
In the second half, the Bengals generated a quality chance to cut into Cortland's lead in the 69th minute. Freshman Theo Pencic (Oslo, Norway/Heltberg) chested down a pass at the top of the box. He spun and fired a shot toward the left side of the goal that Kelly denied with a diving save. Shortly after that play, a Cortland player was sent off with his second yellow of the game, but Buffalo St. also had a player disqualified with his second yellow four minutes later and could not generate another scoring chance.
