CORTLAND, N.Y. - Wells jumped out to a two-set lead and the visiting Express defeated Cortland in four sets, 25-19, 25-11, 23-25, 25-20 in a non-league women's volleyball match.
Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) led Cortland (9-15) with 10 kills and just two errors in 16 attempts for a .500 attack percentage.
Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) finished with nine kills, 14 digs and three blocks, while
Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) and
Taylor Konzen (Bohemia/Connetquot) had seven kills apiece. Konzen also recorded 10 digs, while Moran had two aces and three blocks.
Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) paced the Red Dragons with 21 assists and
Malley Bowen (Owego/Tioga Central) had 11 assists.
Emilee Chiavetta (Angola/Immaculata Academy) totaled nine digs and
Gabby Fernandes (Islip) had eight digs.
Rachel Anderson led Wells (13-10) with 15 kills. Jackie Allen had 14 kills and 19 digs, Jazzmyne Williams finished with 13 kills and 15 digs, and Amanda Springer added eight kills with no errors in 14 attempts for a .571 attack percentage. Springer and Anderson shared the team lead with four blocks each and Jordan Stoops dished out 33 assists.
Wells hit .246 as a team with 55 kills versus 20 errors in 142 attempts, while Cortland finished with a .128 attack percentage (42 kills, 24 errors in 141 attempts).
Wells used a 7-1 run in the first set to expand its 15-11 lead to 22-12 and led by at least five from that point. The Express finished the second set on a 13-1 run, including five Anderson kills, to turn a 12-10 score into a runaway victory.
The third set was tight throughout with 11 ties. The Red Dragons trailed 23-21 after a Nanako Otsuka service ace, but scored the final four points on kills by Anderson, Moore, Konzen and Moore again to claim the set. In the fourth set, Cortland pulled within 17-14 before two Allen kills, a Stoops ace and another Allen kill gave Wells a 21-14 lead. The Red Dragons drew back to 23-19 before the guests scored two of the final three points to end the match.
Cortland closes its SUNYAC regular-season schedule this weekend with three neutral-court matches in Brockport. The Red Dragons face Oneonta Friday at 7 p.m., Oswego Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and Potsdam Saturday at 5 p.m. Cortland, Oneonta, Oswego and Potsdam enter the weekend in a four-way tie for fifth place in the league standings, each at 2-4. The top six teams qualify for the SUNYAC postseason tournament.
