Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cortland Loses at Home to SUNY Poly

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Visiting SUNY Poly pulled out two tight sets to open the match and the Wildcats went on to post a 25-22, 25-21, 25-15 victory over Cortland in a non-league women's volleyball match.

Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) led Cortland (7-12) with eight kills, followed by Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) with seven kills and Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) with six. Moore and Anderson each recorded five block assists, and Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) led the Red Dragons with 26 assists and four aces. Emilee Chiavetta (Angola/Immaculata Academy) finished with a team-high nine digs, while Amelio and Moore had eight apiece.

SUNY Poly (6-14) was paced by Karlie King's 11 kills. Makayla Hulett added seven kills, Sydney Johnson had 28 assists, and Amanda Batten led the Wildcats with 12 digs. Claire Ladlee registered five kills with one error in seven attempts and led the team with three blocks, one solo.

Cortland trailed 15-7 in the first set but got a side out on an Amelio kill, then scored another eight straight points on Amelio's serve to take a 16-15 lead. Amelio served three of her four aces and Anderson and Moore combined for three of their blocks during that run.

The set was tied five times between 16-16 and 20-20 before two Cortland errors put the Wildcats ahead. After a service error by each team, a kill by King put SUNY Poly ahead 24-21. The set ended on a Cortland error two points later.

The second set was tied seven times, the last at 20-20 after an Anderson kill. The Wildcats scored the next four points on a service error, a Ladlee kill, a Hulett block and a Samantha Henry ace. Anderson briefly kept Cortland's hopes alive with a kill, but a service error ended the set.

SUNY Poly took an 11-4 lead in the third set and led by at least four points after that. Cortland was within 21-15 on a Rachael Colombo (Wallkill) kill, but the Wildcats tallied the final four points on a Hulett kill, a Ladlee block, a Johnson ace and a Ladlee kill.

Cortland will head to Buffalo State this weekend for three SUNYAC matches. The Red Dragons face the host Bengals Friday at 5 p.m., Geneseo Saturday at noon and Brockport Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
