BUFFALO, N.Y. - Cortland bounced back after losing the opening set and the Red Dragons defeated host Buffalo State, 19-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-20, in SUNYAC women's volleyball play.
Cortland improved to 2-2 in the conference and 8-12 overall. The Red Dragons remain at Buffalo State Saturday for neutral-court matches versus Geneseo at noon and Brockport at 2:30 p.m.
Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) led Cortland with 12 kills and
Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) finished with 10 kills and 11 digs.
Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) put down seven kills with no errors in 13 attempts for a .538 attack percentage.
Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) tallied seven kills with one error in 12 attempts for a .500 attack percentage and also had seven aces, 36 assists and 11 digs.
Kiersten Cote (East Rockaway/Kellenberg Memorial) rang up nine kills and a team-high 17 digs,
Malley Bowen (Owego/Tioga Central) chipped in with 12 digs, and
Emilee Chiavetta (Angola/Immaculata Academy) served five aces and contributed eight digs. Cortland finished the match with 18 service aces.
Buffalo State (3-15, 0-4 SUNYAC) was led by Brooke Latour's 10 kills. Jordan McKenna added seven kills and Brooke Federko had 28 assists and 11 digs.
Cortland led 17-14 in the first set, but the Bengals went on a 7-1 run, including two Alena McKelvey kills, to take a 21-18 lead. The Red Dragons scored the next point, but the hosts tallied the final four points for the win.
The Red Dragons had only a .062 team attack percentage in the first set, but hit at a .226 clip in the second set in a decisive victory. Cortland opened with leads of 10-2 and 14-4 and led by at least nine points the remainder of the set. Buffalo State was within 20-17 in the third set before an Amelio kill and a
Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) ace made it 22-17. After a Buffalo State point, Cortland rattled off three straight on an Amelio kill, a Bengals' error, and a Van Pelt kill.
Cortland's best offensive output came in the fourth set with a .314 team attack percentage (14 kills, three errors in 35 attempts). Buffalo State, however, also had its best set with a .243 mark (12-3-37), and the teams were tied at 15 after a kill by the Bengals' Bryanna Fisher. Cortland was holding on to a 22-20 lead before wrapping up the set and match on a kill by Van Pelt and two Amelio aces.
