Cortland Sweeps St. John Fisher After Rallies in Final Two Sets

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - Cortland held off a St. John Fisher rally in the first set, then successfully overcame substantial deficits in each of the next two sets to sweep the host Cardinals, 26-24, 25-22, 25-20 in a non-league women's volleyball match.

Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) led Cortland with 11 kills and five blocks. Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) finished with 10 kills and Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) added five kills and three blocks.

Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) registered 28 assists and 12 digs. Kiersten Cote (East Rockaway/Kellenberg Memorial) led the Red Dragons (11-17) with 25 digs, with Moore and Gabby Fernandes (Islip) chipping in with 10 digs each. Amelio, Fernandes, Moran and Moore each had two aces, and Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) had three blocks.

St. John Fisher (15-14) was led by Alea Steigerwald's 11 kills and four blocks. Olivia Levulis had seven kills and four blocks and Izzy Smith had seven kills and 10 digs. Rebecca Hay led the Cardinals with 24 assists and Elise Kreuz paced the team with 22 digs.

Cortland used an 8-1 run in the first set to turn a 16-16 tie into a 24-17 lead. The run featured two Fernandes aces, two Van Pelt kills and a block and a kill from Moran. Fisher, however, scored seven straight times while facing set point to tie the set at 24-24. Cortland recovered to regain the lead on a Fisher attack error and won the set on a kill by Moore.

Fisher took an early 6-0 lead in the second set and still led by that margin at 17-11. Cortland fought back to within 18-17, and following two Fisher points, the Red Dragons mounted a 6-0 run to take a 23-20 lead. Moran had two kills and a block and Sydney Hoffman (Pine Bush) recorded an ace during that decisive stretch. After a Fisher kill, Cortland ended the set with a kill by Van Pelt and a Moran ace.

The third set followed a similar pattern to the second. The hosts led 14-9 before two Moore aces and two Moran kills fueled a 5-0 run to tie the set at 14. Fisher answered with four straight points, but Cortland responded in kind with four straight points and the set was tied at 18. With the score 20-20, Cortland ended the match with five consecutive points on a service erro, an Amelio ace, an Anderson kill, a block by Anderson and Moore, and a Van Pelt kill.

Cortland closes its season with four matches this weekend. The Red Dragons will face Montclair State and RIT, both at RIT, on Friday, followed by contests against Houghton and Geneva, both at Houghton, Saturday.
