Cortland Women Win 11 Individual Events in 168-95 Victory vs. Buffalo State

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Sophomore Marissa Kordal (Eden) and juniors Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) and Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) each won two individual events and five other Red Dragons picked up an event victory as Cortland defeated visiting Buffalo State, 168-95, in a women's swimming and diving dual meet.

Kordal won the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.15) and was the fastest swimmer in the 50-yard butterfly (29.02) in an exhibition role. Davey won both the 50-yard backstroke (28.80) and 100-yard freestyle (55.12), while Szewczyk captured the 50-yard breaststroke (33.32) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.18).

Freshman Julia Torell (Camillus/CBA) won the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.57) and was second in the 100-yard freestyle (58.23). Freshman Isabelle French (Centerport/Harborfields) finished first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:36.66) and was second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.31).

Sophomore Heidi Simpfenderfer (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:23.68), junior Emma Gulbin (Wall Township, NJ/Wall) claimed first in the 50-yard freestyle (27.01) and freshman Josie LaPolt (New Paltz) touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.54).

Cortland rang up first-place and second-place times in both relays. LaPolt, Szewczyk, Torell and sophomore Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) won the 400-yard medley relay (4:14.93), with junior Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee), junior Vanessa Vegder (Dansville), Kordal and senior Hallie Marquart (Geneva) in second (4:22.85). As exhibition entries, Torell, Simpfenderfer, Miller and Gulbin won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:55.27), and junior Jasmine Elmassry (Queens/Francis Lewis), Kanoza, junior Lauren McBrinn (Suffern/Paramus Catholic (NJ)) and freshman Allison Lemischak (Hastings-on-Hudson/Hastings) finished second (4:09.26).

Cortland earned top-three sweeps in five events. Freshman Kailyn Anselment (Moreau/Glens Falls) was second (11:27.74) and McBrinn finished third (12:10.03) in the 1,000-yard freestyle behind Simpfenderfer. Elmassry was second (5:53.33) and McBrinn placed third (6:03.18) behind French in the 500-yard freestyle.

Freshman Rebecca Diers (Bethpage) was second in both the 50-yard breaststroke (33.62) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.09) behind Szewczyk. Sophomore Kelcey Madigan (Waverly) was third in the 50 breast (34.92) and Gulbin placed third in the 100 breast (1:14.17). In the 200-yard freestyle, Kordal's win was followed by Miller in second (2:09.06) and Marquart in third (2:13.28).

Also for the Red Dragons, Lemischak finished second in the 50-yard backstroke (31.79) and Anselment was second as an exhibition entry in the 400-yard individual medley (5:02.55).

Cortland will compete at the Hamilton Invitational November 30 and December 1.
