My Favorite Martin; Red Dragons Beat Canton, 3-2, in OT

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Junior Martin Lavallee (Goose Bay, NL/Nepean Raiders) scored his first goal of the season 1:57 into overtime to lead the Cortland men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory versus Canton in non-conference action Saturday night. The Red Dragons evened their record at 2-2, while the Kangaroos fell to 1-3.

Junior Sean Perichak (Oakville, ON/Markham Royals) and sophomore Alex Storjohann (Phoenix, AZ/Kirkland Lake) each recorded a goal and an assist for Cortland in support of Lavallee's game-winner. Senior Mike Crowley (Buffalo/Springfield Blues) collected two assists, and sophomores Scott Docherty (Oakville, ON/Georgetown Raiders) and Tom Ritchie (Spencerport/New York PAL Islanders) chipped in with one assist apiece. Junior goalie Nick Modica (Suffern/New Jersey Hitmen) turned aside 25 shots.

Sophomore Jake Mayette (Madrid/Syracuse Stars) registered a goal and an assist for Canton. Freshman Jeffrey Gauld (Whitby, ON/Whitby Fury) also netted a goal, while senior Joe Deveny (Stouffville, ON/Stouffville Spirit), junior David Hopfer (Tonawanda/Boston Jr. Bandits) and freshman Max Routledge (Scarborough, ON/Toronto Patriots) each recorded an assist. Junior goalie Michael Cerasuolo (Montreal, QC/Brockville Braves) made 26 saves.

Storjohann gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at 3:38 of the first period with a wrist shot from the right side. Gauld tied the game at 18:42 of the first with a goal right in front. In the second period, the Red Dragons killed off two two-man power plays by Canton, but the Kangaroos took a 2-1 lead at 16:06 just two seconds after a Cortland penalty expired.

Perichak sent the game into overtime with a power-play goal at 15:34 of the third on a deflection in front off a pass from Crowley from the right point. In the extra five-minute period, Cortland outshot Canton, 4-0, with Lavallee's wrist shot through traffic sealing the win.
