CORTLAND, N.Y. - The nationally second-ranked Geneseo men's hockey team scored goals in the first and third periods in defeating Cortland, 2-0, Friday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena. The Knights improved to 10-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the conference, while the Red Dragons dropped to 3-6 and 1-5.
Junior goalie
Nick Modica (Suffern/New Jersey Hitmen) registered a career-high 46 saves for Cortland. Senior goalie Devin McDonald (Calgary, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) turned aside 17 shots in posting the shutout for Geneseo.
Junior Andrew Romano (Drexel Hill, PA/Johnstown Tomahawks) netted both of the goals for the Knights. Senior Anthony Marra (Guelph, ON/Georgetown Raiders), juniors Will Campion (Seaford/Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs) and David Szmyd (Elmwood Park, NJ/Jersey Hitmen) and sophomore Kyle Hartman (Raleigh, NC/Jersey Hitmen) each recorded an assist.
Romano tallied the game-winning goal at 12:01 of the first period when he deflected Campion's point shot over Modica. After a scoreless second period, Romano made it a 2-0 game at 12:38 of the third period with a one-time shot deep in the slot off Marra's pass from behind the goal. Less than two minutes later, the Red Dragons had a power-play attempt but could not cut into Geneseo's lead. Then with under two minutes to go, Cortland took a penalty before having the chance to pull Modica for an extra skater as the Knights sealed the 2-0 win.
