Cortland Women Finish Second of Ten at Hamilton Invitational

Julia Torell won the 100-yard butterfly and finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly
CLINTON, N.Y. – Julia Torell (Camillus/CBA), Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) and Taylor Williams (Middletown/Minisink Valley) each won individual events to help Cortland finish second out of 10 schools at the Hamilton College Women's Swimming and Diving Invitational Friday and Saturday.

The Red Dragons posted a final team score of 1,315.5points, almost 300 better than third-place Oswego's 1,012. Hamilton won the title with 1,814 points. Rounding out the field were Trinity (Conn.) (1,008), Oneonta (986.5), Mt. Holyoke (740), Smith (637), Potsdam (585), Sarah Lawrence (420) and Buffalo State (361).

Torell won the 100-yard butterfly in 59.87 seconds and also finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.00) and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.79). Davey captured the 50-yard freestyle in 25.15 seconds and was runner-up in two other events – the 100-yard freestyle (54.99) and 200-yard freestyle (2:00.31).

Williams claimed top honors in 1-meter diving (242.05 points) and placed fifth on the 3-meter board (221.50 points). Williams also finished the weekend with an 11-dive score of 406.35 points on the 1-meter board - the 11 dive score didn't affect team scoring, but does give Williams the first of two needed NCAA qualifying scores on that board.

Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) and Heidi Simpfenderfer (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) each earned two top-six individual finishes. Szewczyk was third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.85) and sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:38.79). Simpfenderfer finished fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:03.27) and sixth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.91). Marissa Kordal (Eden) earned Cortland's other top-six finish with her sixth-place effort in the 500-yard freestyle (5:29.46).

Cortland finished third or better in all five relays, led by a victory from Davey, Simpfenderfer, Allison Lemischak (Hastings-on-Hudson/Hastings) and Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.24).

Davey also swam on three runner-up relays. She led off the 200-yard medley relay, followed by Szewczyk, Torell and Miller, that finished in 1:52.23. Kordal, Kailyn Anselment (Moreau/Glens Falls), Simpfenderfer and Davey were second in the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:11.38), while Kordal, Torell, Simpfenderfer and Davey were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:46.67). The foursome of Josie LaPolt (New Paltz), Szewczyk, Torell and Simpfenderfer placed third in the 400-yard medley relay (4:13.75).

Cortland will be idle from competition for more than a month before traveling to Hartwick for a dual meet on Saturday, January 5.
