CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh men's hockey team scored goals less than two minutes apart in the third period to earn a 4-3 victory against Cortland Friday night in SUNYAC action. The Cardinals improved to 5-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the conference. The Red Dragons fell to 4-7 and 2-6.
Junior
Nico Gonzalez (Rochester/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) led Cortland with two goals and an assist. Freshman
Dorian Overland (Kingston, ON/Kingston Voyageurs) netted his first career goal and added two assists, and freshman
Ethan Homitz (Allison Park, PA/New Hampshire Monarchs) collected the first points of his career with two assists. Junior goalie
Nick Modica (Suffern/New Jersey Hitmen) turned aside 28 shots.
Junior Joe Drabin (Rochester/Wenatchee Wild) recorded a goal and an assist for Plattsburgh. Senior Ross Sloan (Oakville, ON/Oakville Blades), junior Antoine Desnoyers (Quebec City, QC/Cegep de Saint-Laurent) and sophomore Liam Lawson (Victoria, BC/Powell River Paper Kings) each added a goal, senior Jesse Neher (Calgary, AB/Cowichen Valley Capitals) registered two assists and three others each chipped in with one assist. Sophomore goalie Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda/Connecticut Jr. Rangers) made 19 saves.
Sloan gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead at 9:11 of the first period on a loose puck in front. Gonzalez tied the game 17 seconds later with a one-time shot from the slot. Plattsburgh took the lead into the intermission when Lawson one-timed a shot in from the right side of the crease.
The Red Dragons grabbed a 3-2 lead after two periods. Overland tied the game at 7:27 before Gonzalez netted his second goal of the night at 11:15 with a top-corner shot from the right circle.
Drabin tied the game at 4:46 of the third period, and Desnoyers scored the game-winner at 6:40 on a deflection right in front. Cortland's best chance to tie the game came with just over three minutes to play, but Poreda made a sliding pad save on a one-time shot by sophomore
Alex Storjohann (Phoenix, AZ/Kirkland Lake). The Red Dragons pulled Modica for an extra skater with one minute to play, but a penalty for too many men on the ice put Cortland down two skaters and Plattsburgh closed out the game with possession of the puck in the final 52 seconds.
