Cortland Falls at Buffalo St., 3-2

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Buffalo St. women's hockey team scored goals less than three minutes apart in the third period to erase a 2-1 deficit and defeated Cortland, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in NEWHL action. The Red Dragons dropped to 7-12-2 overall and 2-11-1 in the conference, while the Bengals improved to 13-8-2 and 9-4-1.

Sophomore Miranda Kolb (Watertown/Syracuse Nationals) netted her team-high 11th goal of the season for Cortland. Freshman Kirsten MacDowell (Ottsville, PA/New Jersey Rockets) also scored a goal. Junior Samantha Pippin (Allen Park, MI/Team Detroit), sophomore Emily King (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals) and freshman Olivia Wilburn (Stockton, CA/San Jose Sharks) each collected an assist. Sophomore goalie Rachael Farmer (Grand Island/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) made 24 saves.

Caitie Horvatits, Emma Ruggiero and Erin Gehen netted goals for Buffalo St. Christine Harris registered three assists, and Lila Toczek, Cheyenne Matson and Emily DeCock picked up one assist apiece. Goalie Justine Silva turned aside 16 shots.

Kolb gave Cortland a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 9:40 of the first period. Horvatits tied the game just over two minutes later. MacDowell put the Red Dragons up, 2-1, with another Cortland power-play goal, netting her second score of the season at 4:23 of the second period.

The Red Dragons successfully killed off a five-minute major power-play for the Bengals that spanned from late in the second period to early in the third period, but just over two minutes later, Ruggiero tied the game on another Buffalo St. power-play attempt. Gehen then netted the game winner at 7:12. Cortland pulled Farmer for an extra skater with 1:05 to play, but Silva made a save on the Red Dragon's lone shot on goal in the closing minute to preserve the victory.
