KISSIMMEE, FLA. – The Cortland softball team scored a combined 20 runs in victories over Washington University-St. Louis, 12-6, and Arcadia University, 8-0 in six innings, at the D9 Sunkissed Games.
Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) homered in each game and
Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) threw a three-hit shutout versus Arcadia for the Red Dragons, who improved to 3-1 on the season. Cortland continues play in Florida Tuesday versus Springfield (Mass.) at 11:15 a.m. and Millsaps (Miss.) at 1:30 p.m.
Cortland 12, Washington-St. Louis 6
Cortland took advantage of six errors by the Bears in the first two innings alone to go ahead 5-0. The Red Dragons scored three in the first on just one hit – a leadoff single by
Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) – in addition to an
Ericka Sadowski (Liverpool) walk, a
Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) RBI fielder's choice, and four errors. The lead grew to 5-0 in the second when Sadowski drove in a run with an infield single, with a second run scoring when Sadowski alertly took second and
Alissa De Padua (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) scored from third.
Wash U picked up a run in the second on a Julia Flores leadoff double, a passed ball, and a two-out Josi Elder RBI single. Cortland, which scored at least once in six of seven innings, went up 7-1 in the top of the fourth on O'Gorman's solo homer and a
Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) sac fly.
The Bears struck for five runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 7-6 game. The big plays in the inning were pinch hitter Mackenzie Gauden being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, followed by an Amy Walsh three-run double and a Taylor Arends RBI single, all with two outs.
Cortland, however, responded with three runs in the top of the fifth on RBI singles by De Padua and Schoonmaker and an O'Gorman RBI double. The Red Dragons tacked on a run in the sixth when Felicello led off with a triple and scored on a
Tori Scharff (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) single, and another in the seventh when Sadowski led off with a double, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a Hoyt single.
Sadowski finished 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and two runs scored. De Padua was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs and Felicello was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two hit-by-pitches. Schoonmaker, O'Gorman, Hoyt and Scharff each finished 2-for-5, with O'Gorman and Hoyt driving home two runs each and Scharff and Schoonmaker added one RBI apiece.
Joelle Salisbury (Rotterdam/Bishop Gibbons) earned the win with a complete game in the circle to improve to 2-0. She allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Amy Walsh led Wash U (2-3) with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with three RBI. Maggie Clapp and Julia Flores each went 2-for-4. Anna McKee started, and also re-entered in relief, and in a combined five and two thirds innings she gave up seven runs, but only one earned, on eight hits. She fanned four and walked three.
Cortland 8, Arcadia 0 (6 inn.)
The game started off as a pitching duel between Van Dorn and Arcadia's Mary Pat Murray. After three scoreless innings, Cortland broke through for a run in the bottom of the fourth when Scharff doubled,
Amber Rice (Adams/A-P-W) singled, and Felicello hit a sac fly just foul down the right field line.
Cortland extended its lead to 4-0 in the fifth. De Padua led off with a double and was bunted to third by Schoonmaker. With two outs, O'Gorman hit a two-run homer to right. Hoyt followed with a double, and pinch runner
Haley Muehlbauer (Williamsville/Williamsville South) scored on a Scharff single through the left side.
The Red Dragons invoked the eight-run rule in the sixth. Felicello doubled,
Hannah Thornhill (Heuvelton) walked, and pinch hitter
Cailey Cuttita (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) singled to load the bases.
Jessica Marsh (Wynantskill/Troy) hit a pinch-hit sac fly to right to score a run, and junior
Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home), another pinch hitter, ended the game with a three-run blast to right center for her first career home run.
Van Dorn finished with a three-hit shutout over the six-inning contest. She struck out three and walked none. De Padua was 2-for-2 and Scharff finished 2-for-3. Hunter Schantz went 1-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch for the Knights (1-5).
