Van Dorn's Arm and Bat Lead Cortland Past NYU, 6-0

KISSIMMEE, FLA. – Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) threw a three-hit shutout and went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI as Cortland defeated NYU, 6-0, to open Thursday's action at the D9 Sunkissed Games. The Red Dragons lost their second game of the day to Susquehanna University, 9-1 in six innings, and are now 4-4 on the season.

Cortland will close its Florida trip Friday versus Washington (Md.) at 9 a.m. and McDaniel at 11:15 a.m.

Cortland 6, NYU 0

Van Dorn evened her record at 2-2 on the season with the three-hit shutout. She struck out four batters and did not walk anyone. She was 2-for-3 with a double as every Red Dragon starter recorded at least one hit. Tori Scharff (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) was 1-for-2 with a homer and walk.

Diana King went 2-for-3 to lead NYU (3-4). Scarlett Murphy started and allowed 10 hits in five innings. Olivia Mould gave up one run on one hit over the final two innings.

Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the second on a Van Dorn double, followed by an Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) double that drove home pinch runner Haley Muehlbauer (Wiliamsville/Williamsville South). The Red Dragons scored twice in the fourth, loading the bases on one-out singles by Cailey Cuttita (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), Scharff and Taylor Felicello (Marlboro), followed by a Van Dorn two-run single.

The lead grew to 5-0 in the fifth on a Cuttita RBI groundout and a Scharff RBI single, and Hoyt closed the scoring with a solo homer in the sixth.

Van Dorn pitched out of two jams as the Violets left a runner on third in the first, and had runners on second and third with one out in the sixth before two groundouts ended the inning.

Susquehanna 9, Cortland 1 (6 inn.)

Susquehanna head coach Brad Posner picked up the win in his first matchup versus his former mentor Julie Lenhart. Posner was an assistant at Cortland under Lenhart for 12 seasons from 2000-11 and is currently in his third season as Susquehanna's head coach.

The River Hawks (6-6) struck early with three runs in the first on an Emilie Boman RBI single and Leigh Ann Greenwood two-run double. They added a run in the top of the second on a two-base error, passed ball and wild pitch.

Cortland notched two hits in each of the first three innings but failed to score. The Red Dragons got on the board in the fourth when Scharff doubled, moved to third on a Felicello single, and scored on Victoria Brown's (Fresh Meadows/Archbishop Molloy) sacrifice fly. Cortland, however, stranded runners on first and third, and ended the game with eight runners left on base.

Susquehanna picked up two runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Boman and Jill Ahrens, and pushed the lead to 9-1 in the sixth on a Kasey Bost RBI single and a Greenwald two-run double. Cortland nearly avoided the eight-run rule when a shot by Brown just missed clearing the fence in left center with two outs in the sixth. She instead ended on second with a double, and a flyout ended the game.

Boman finished 3-for-3 with a double, walk, two RBI and two runs and Greenwald was 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk and four RBI for Susquehanna. Bost was 2-for-4. Alexa Gonzalez scattered 10 hits and gave up just one run for the victory. She struck out two and walked none.

Brown led Cortland with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate with a double, sac fly and RBI. Ericka Sadowski (Liverpool) and Scharff each went 2-for-3. Joelle Salisbury (Rotterdam/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) took the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, in four and a third innings.
